Class activities for Tuesday, April 12

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We talked about how to use a natural voice in informational writing. For example, rather than write like a Wikipedia article stuffed with impersonal facts, it will be more interesting to write with a personal voice, like how a person would talk.

Students worked on collecting research for their I-Search project. Students will research a topic and create a digital presentation using Google Docs (docs.mrhowd.com).

Here are more details about the I-Search project. Our general timeline :

  1. Week 1: Collect research
  2. Week 2: Select research, plan presentation, start draft of presentation
  3. Week 3: Finalize presentation, present at our I-Search Conference at the end of April

Math: Students practiced organizing data today. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 170-172. Note that only the survey part of p. 171 needs to be completed. The rest of the page will be completed in class tomorrow.

Science: We finished the measuring speed experiment. Homework is to finish calculating the speed and average speed of today’s trials and then to finish the analysis on p. 10.

Social Studies: We finished learning about slavery in the American Colonies. Homework is to finish Notebook pp 49-50.

Science: Groups of students completed an experiment to measure the speed of a model cart. Homework is to finish calculating the speed and average speed of the cart, if not completed in class.

Social Studies: We learned about how slaves told stories about their family history, sang songs and worshiped in church to keep their hope alive.

Writing: None today due to the 5th Grade Camp Read-a-Thon.

Students are continuing to work on their next piece of writing, the I-Search project. Students will research a topic and create a digital presentation using Google Docs (docs.mrhowd.com).

Lightning Larry Play:  Last night’s play went wonderfully and the class received lots of compliments. Great work students and the families that helped them. Special thanks to Mrs. Linden for help with the set, costumes and props!
