Class activities for Thursday, May 17

Thursday, May 17th, 2012

Spelling: Students started making their Words to Learn lists from words missed on the last spelling test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: None today due to finishing a class project.

Writing: Students continued to work their poetry. A collection of poems will be due into portfolios on Monday, May 21.

Math: We practiced composing and decomposing fractions by finding different ways to add up fractions. Homework is to finish Journal P12-10.

Science: Students begin their experiments to test what plants need to survive.

Social Studies: We talked about how many problems would happen in a community without rules. We also started to read a story about a kingdom without rules.

Class activities for Wednesday, May 16

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Two groups performed their Literature Circles plays today.

Writing: We talked about using whitespace in poems to put only certain words on each line. This will allow the reader to see just the ideas that the poet wants the reader to see. A collection of poems will be due into portfolios on Monday, May 21.

Math: We practiced subtracting mixed numbers. Homework is to finish Journal P12-9. Here is the Khan Academy skill for adding and subtracting mixed numbers.

Science: Students started planning experiments that would test what plants need to survive. We will be testing if plants need these things:

  • Salt or fresh water
  • Water
  • Air
  • Light
  • Soil
  • Heat

Social Studies: None today due to our reading and math skills time.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students read and practiced performing Literature Circles plays to work on oral reading fluency.

Writing: None today due to our technology time. A collection of poems will be due into portfolios on Monday, May 21.

Math: We practiced adding mixed numbers. Homework is to finish Journal P12-8. Here is the Khan Academy skill for adding and subtracting mixed numbers.

Science: None today due to our math skills time.

Social Studies: We talked about what it would be like to have a school, community or country with no rules or laws. Homework is to finish the Life Without Rules chart.

Spelling: We reviewed irregular verbs:

  • sell/sold
  • build/built
  • keep/kept
  • stick/stuck
  • see/saw

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students read Literature Circles plays to work on oral reading fluency.

Writing: We learned about how to use fragments to create a poem. Here is a fragment poem we wrote together:

Bus Ride to Mackinac

Kids talking
Children playing
People waiting
Watching movies
Playing card games
Bus bumping
Sun rising
Excitement growing
Bridge appearing
People cheering!

Students also continued to work on their poems. A collection of poems will be due into portfolios on Monday, May 21.

Math: We reviewed how to convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers. We also practiced adding and subtracting mixed numbers. Homework is to finish Journal P12-7. Here is the Khan Academy skill for adding and subtracting mixed numbers.

Science: We started to learn about requirements for life. We made a list of requirements and will test them using plants this week.

Social Studies: We started to learn about why it is important to have a government and laws.
