Class activities for Friday, September 14

Spelling: We reviewed rules for adding prefixes onto to base words. We remembered that when a prefix is added onto a word, the spelling of the base word does not change.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays. Today’s assignment will be collected on Monday.

Reading: Students previewed new Literature Circles books today.

Writing: To think of possible writing ideas for this year, students created their own map of “buried stories.” Each student drew a map of a familiar place, then thought of interesting memories that took place there. These ideas could be turned into stories this year!

Students also worked on drafting for their current piece of writing.  The first piece of writing, a personal narrative, will be due on Friday, September 21.

Math: None today. We will review fractions and decimals on Monday, as well as converting fractions into decimals with division.  See a video here about that. The homework of Journal P1-2 from yesterday will be reviewed Monday.

Science: We reviewed food chains and webs today.

Social Studies: Related to Constitution Day, we watched a movie about what America might be like without the constitution and the Bill of Rights. Short answer: not pretty! Ask your student for details!

Here are some other Constitution Day goodies: Learn why are country doesn’t have kings, how we started the Revolution, and the Preamble to the Constitution.

Here’s the Preamble to the Constitution:

We the people
In order to form a more perfect union,
Establish justice, insure domestic tranquility,
Provide for the common defense,
Promote the general welfare and
Secure the blessings of liberty
To ourselves and our posterity
Do ordain and establish this Constitution
For the United States of America.

Here’s the song:
