The first piece of writing, a personal narrative, will be due on Monday, September 24 (new date). Students should be revising or editing at this point.

Class activities for Tuesday, September 18

Tuesday, September 18th, 2012

Spelling: We continued to review rules for adding suffixes onto base words. Today, we talked about dropping the silent e for vowel suffixes (care/caring/careful) and doubling the last letter of one syllable words (run/running, tap/tapping).

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today, students received new Literature Circles groups and each group planned how many pages to read each day.

Writing: We talked about finding a focus in writing by choosing just the best ideas and time to write about. If the topic is too big, it will be hard to write enough for the reader to understand. If a student wanted to write about Christmas Break, then could narrow it down, to New Year’s Eve, then to just the party when the ball was dropping.

The first piece of writing, a personal narrative, will be due on Friday, September 21. Students should be revising at this point.

Math: We practiced using decimal place values today. Homework is to finish Journal P1-4.

Class activities for Monday, September 17

Monday, September 17th, 2012

Spelling: We reviewed rules for adding suffixes onto base words. For most words, the suffix is just added onto a word without changing the spelling of the baseword.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: None today due to art and a discussion about dishonest practices with Khan Academy. Apparently, some students in class have been trying to cheat in order to move ahead in Khan Academy. Unfortunately for them, they not only have to live with the guilt that their conscience will remind them of, but they are also struggling with Khan Academy because future skills build on past ones.

Writing: None today due to our technology time.

The first piece of writing, a personal narrative, will be due on Friday, September 21.

Math: We learned about the thousandths place value. Homework is to finish Journal P1-3.

Science: None today due to math skills practice.

Social Studies: Students assemble their social studies folders today.

I’ve asked all students to memorize the Preamble to the Constitution:

We the people
In order to form a more perfect union,
Establish justice, insure domestic tranquility,
Provide for the common defense,
Promote the general welfare and
Secure the blessings of liberty
To ourselves and our posterity
Do ordain and establish this Constitution
For the United States of America.

Here’s the song:
