Class activities for Wednesday, December 19

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

Spelling: None today due to extra time with writing.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students previewed and selected new Literature Circles books.

Writing: Students started prewriting conferences to discuss their adventure story ideas. They also started to plan their story, including the beginning, middle, end, characters, plot and setting.

Our next writing project is a Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook. Students will write a fiction adventure story with choices that the reader can make. Each choice can change how the story turns out.  Students will publish their adventure as a website at sites.mrhowd.com. See below for more details.

This project is due Wednesday, January 23. Students should be prewriting to gather ideas at this point.

Math: We played a game to review for tomorrow’s test about division. There is a practice test on math book p. 140.

Science: We played a game to review for tomorrow’s test about body systems, genetics, traits, and survival.

Social Studies: We played a game to review for tomorrow’s test about explorers. Here is a practice test.

Spelling: We reviewed words with the ei and ie spelling patterns.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: The final two groups performed their Literature Circles plays today.

Writing: Today, we talked about the various kinds of endings of Choose Your Own Adventure books. There is usually one good ending that solves the problem, several bad endings that usually result in death for the character, and some neutral endings in which the character fails in solving the problem, but at least survives. See below for some examples.

Writing: Our next writing project was introduced today, a Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook. Students will write a fiction adventure story with choices that the reader can make. Math: We practiced estimating quotients of large numbers and dividing using calculators. Homework is to finish Journal P5-7.

Science: We finished learning about how living creatures survive over time, how catastrophes are involved in making fossils and extinctions, and how animals use traits to survive.

Social Studies: Today, we reviewed the impacts of the explorers we’ve learned about, and tried to order the explorers by importance. Homework is to finish notebook pp. 31-32.

Spelling: We reviewed homophones with long /e/ spelling patterns:

  • feet/feat
  • heel/heal
  • beat/beet

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Two groups performed their Literature Circles plays today.

Writing: Students worked on publishing today.

The next piece of writing, a fiction piece, is due Monday, December 17. Students should be publishing at this point.

Math: None today due to STAR Friday.

Science: We started to learn about how living creatures survive over time, how catastrophes are involved in making fossils and extinctions, and how animals use traits to survive.

Social Studies: We learned about how Spain and France battled for control of Florida during the 1500s. Homework is to finish reading social studies book pp. 70-71 and complete notebook p. 30.

Spelling: None today due to extra time with writing.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students practiced reading their Literature Circles magazine plays today. Groups will perform the plays htis week and next.

Writing: Students worked on completing editing conferences and editing or publishing.

The next piece of writing, a fiction piece, is due Monday, December 17. Students should be publishing at this point.

Math: We continued to practice dividing using two-digit divisors. Homework is to finish Journal P5-6.

Science: We completed an activity that modeled how a dog would have certain traits based on which genes were randomly inherited from their mother or father.

Social Studies: We finished writing notes about various European explorers.
