Class activities for Thursday, September 24

Thursday, September 24th, 2015

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 4-6 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: Today we started to practice making connections to something a text reminded us of. We’ll continue this more next week.

Writing: None today due to discussing poor behavior choices by many in the class. We’ve had to practice lining up quietly, lining up quickly, pushing our chairs in, walking in the hallway quietly, and knowing when to listen and when to speak. Interruptions and lack of self-control are things are class is really struggling with, and it may take some significant practice during recess to work the kinks out. We’ll be starting that practice next week.

That unfortunately left no time for writing, so students will need to work extra at home.

A personal narrative is due Monday, September 28. Students should be ready to edit their story for spelling, capitals, and other things to help make their writing easier to read. Students can work on their story from home by going to docs.mrhowd.com.

Math: None this afternoon due to the abundance of distracting choices. Hopefully next week we’ll have some solutions we can try to use our math time more wisely.

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: None today due to extra time with social studies. We’ll have extra science time next week.

Social Studies: We read a story called, Ox-Cart Man, about a family that used natural resources to produce goods, which they exchanged for money, that they spent on tools, to help them produce more goods year after year. Students took notes about examples of economics they found in the book. Homework is to finish the Ox-Cart Man Literature Connection notes if not done in class.

Notes:

  • Our BioBlitz field trip to For-Mar Nature Preserve is tomorrow, Friday, September 25 from 9-noon!

Class activities for Wednesday, September 23

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2015

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 4-6 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: Today we practiced thinking of curious, open-ended questions. We also read some of our shared reading book, Esperanza Rising.

Writing: Today we practiced sharing our writing so that others can make comments on it. Students also worked on revising their writing more today. A personal narrative is due Friday, September 25. Students should be revising their story by making changes. Students can work on their story from home by going to docs.mrhowd.com. I also told students that their story can be about a half page this time, due to the short turn-around time for this piece; in the future, I’ll ask for at least a page.

Math: We started to learn about the distributive property today; however, many people in the class showed distracted and disruptive behavior. We working on these things: looking at the speaker, focusing on learning, not shouting out random comments, showing self-control, using time wisely. We’ve had to use some of our recess minutes to catch up math lately, and we may need to again. Over time, I’m sure we’ll get better at using our math time wisely; it may just take some extra practice at recess to make that happen.

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: None today due to our reading skills practice day.

Social Studies: We started to learn about economics today. We talked about how people have unlimited wants, but limited resources, so they are forced to make choices about which goods and services they want.

Notes:

  • We are looking for a few more chaperones for our BioBlitz field trip to For-Mar Nature Preserve on Friday, September 25 from 9-noon.
