Class activities for Monday, November 30

Monday, November 30th, 2015

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 28-30 are available in class and due on Friday.

Reading: Students started the first Literature Circles reading day today, and we’ll finish the remainder of the day on Wednesday.

Writing: We started prewriting for our next piece of writing, also a fiction story. Students started planning the problem of the story and how it would be solved. We talked about having the characters try around three ways to solve the problem. That gives the story more action and it won’t feel so rushed compared to a story in which the characters solve the problem on the first try.

A fiction story will be due Friday, December 18.

Math: Students continued to practice rounding and place value skills today using MobyMax Math.

Here are some skills we’ve been working on lately:

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: Students worked on a district assessment about electrical conductors and insulators.

Social Studies: We continued working on our Market Day website today, getting it ready for Market Day on December 3.

Notes:

Our Mission:
All students in Room 130 will do their best and get ready for 5th grade.

I hope your family has a happy Thanksgiving holiday!

Class activities for Tuesday, November 24

Tuesday, November 24th, 2015

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: No cursive assignment this week.

Reading: Students received new Literature Circles book groups and they planned the number of pages to read each day throughout the book.

Writing: Students completed editing conferences today, looking for mistakes with spelling, capitals, sentence sense, paragraphs, and editing for dialogue.

Today was the last school work day for this piece. If your student has more editing or publishing work to do, or if they are behind schedule and aren’t yet done with their draft, your student will need to work this week and weekend to finish up. Homework is to finish this story. A fiction story will be due Monday, November 30.

Math: We practiced rounding and place value skills today using MobyMax Math.

Here are some skills we’ve been working on lately:

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: Students completed an experiment to test what types of materials electricity can move through. Homework is to finish the Conductors and Insulators experiment if not done in class.

Social Studies: We continued working on our Market Day website today, getting it ready for Market Day next week. Congratulations to Skylar, who was chosen as webmaster. We’ll start adding web pages tomorrow.

Class activities for Monday, November 23

Monday, November 23rd, 2015

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: No cursive assignment this week.

Reading: None today due to Eagle Talk and art.

Writing: We talked about the correct way to punctuate dialogue:

  • “Use quotation marks,” said Mr. Howd.
  • “And don’t forget the comma before the speaker tag,” he added.

Today was the last revising day for this piece. Your student should be nearly done with adding new details, taking out parts that don’t match, or with changing words or ideas. A fiction story will be due Monday, November 30.

Math: We practiced rounding today. Students used Khan Academy to practice math skills.

Here are some skills we’ve been working on lately:

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: We reviewed our last experiment and learned about open and closed circuits. Closed circuits are connected together, so electricity can flow. Open circuits have an opening, or gap, that stops electricity from flowing.

Social Studies: We started working on Market Day today. We are creating a Market Day website to showcase products. The class also formed advertising agencies that will write advertisements, take pictures, and design the website. The other fourth grade classes are making products and will hire our class to advertise their products.
