Class activities for Monday, March 20

Spelling: We practiced some mnemonic sayings to help with tricky words:

  • piece of pie
  • don’t believe a lie
  • forty forts

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students received new Literature Circles books and they planning how many pages they will read each day.

Writing: Students worked on drafting their novel today. Our current project is our final fiction piece of the year. Each student has a daily writing goal of 200-400 words. The novel project is due Wednesday, March 29. Look below for more details. Your student should be drafting at this point and have reached about 85% of their word goal; you can check JupiterGrades to see how much your student has completed (updated Friday). Homework is work on writing for at least 15 minutes.

Novel Writing Project 2017

The final piece of the 3rd Marking Period will be our final fiction project of the year. Students will write and publish a novel. Each student will write their own novel, with a word goal minimum of 2,000-4,000 words, based on their reading level (each student’s minimum writing goal is equal to their reading level multiplied by 500). The novels will be written in Google Docs (docs.google.com) to make use of the word count feature. Final novels will be uploaded to Lulu.com and published as paperback books, which can be purchased for reasonable prices. So yes, students will actually write and publish their own novels. This project is based on the National Novel Writing Month Young Writers program.

Math: We worked for 20 minutes on order of operations and algebra. This was our final class work time on these skills; students that are still unfinished will need to finish on their own. We also started our topic on fractions. Today, we reviewed equivalent fractions. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Science: None today.

Social Studies: Poor behavior choices used up our social studies time today, so students were forced into homework. Homework is to ready pp. 152-155 and to complete the notes on each page.

Spelling: We reviewed homophones and common long /e/ spelling patterns today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: We used this time to talk about character strengths and how thinking about others and building good friendships makes people happier and healthier.

Writing: Students worked on drafting their novel today. Our current project is our final fiction piece of the year. Each student has a daily writing goal of 200-400 words. The novel project is due Wednesday, March 29. Look below for more details. Your student should be drafting at this point and have reached about 75% of their word goal; you can check JupiterGrades to see how much your student has completed (updated today). Homework is work on writing for at least 15 minutes.

Social Studies: We used this time to learn how Irish culture has shown up in American dancing and music.

Reading: Students previewed new Literature Circles books today and rated their top choices.

Writing: Students worked on drafting their novel today. Our current project is our final fiction piece of the year. Each student has a daily writing goal of 200-400 words. Science: We reviewed our last two experiments about the effect speed and mass has on collisions. We learned that the faster the speed, and the higher the mass, the greater the force of the collision. This video sums it up:

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: We started to preview new Literature Circles books today.

Writing: We reviewed run-on sentences and talked about including just one or two ideas in a sentence, then starting a new one. Thinking about this during drafting will make it so a student doesn’t have so much editing later. Students also worked on drafting their novel today. Our current project is our final fiction piece of the year. Each student has a daily writing goal of 200-400 words. The novel project is due Wednesday, March 29. Look below for more details. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy, focusing especially on order of operation skills.

Science: We finished a class experiment about how speed affects a collision, and students worked on a group experiment testing how mass affects collisions. Homework is to finish the analysis questions 1, 2, and 4 on p. 18, and questions 1, 2, and 4 on p. 20, if not finished in class.

Social Studies: We read about how the colonists protested the Townshend act taxes, how it was partially repealed, and how tensions between England and the colonists were growing.

Spelling: We practiced learning the meaning of words with prefixes and practiced spelling the base word.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: We practiced our class play today.

Writing: We reviewed the idea that using fresh language makes the writing style more interesting. Fresh language is using interesting words in interesting and surprising ways. Students also worked on drafting their novel today. Our current project is our final fiction piece of the year. Each student has a daily writing goal of 200-400 words.
