Class activities for Tuesday, January 15

Tuesday, January 15th, 2019

Spelling: We practiced when to use apostrophes and when not to.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.  

Reading: Students completed STAR Reading tests today.

Writing: Students continued to draft their adventure story, with the goal being to write at least a new scene each day.

This Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook project is due Wednesday, January 23.  Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Students should write at least one or two new scenes each day in order to finish on time.

Math: We practiced multi-digit division today, such as 96 / 12. Our average class progress is still 59%. We haven’t been making much progress the last few days, but we have a goal of 97% by January 25. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We read more about the details of the water shortage in our project city.

Social Studies: Students worked on a digital review and quiz about the Pilgrims and Puritans today.

Character Strength: We are learning about optimism this week.

Spelling: We used this time to work on our Leadership Notebook today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.  

Reading: We read expository passages today about how butterflies and moths use wing patterns to survive, and also about patterns in rocks.

Writing: Students continued to draft their adventure story. We talked about making sure each scene is long enough to have some talking, action, and visual details.

This Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook project is due Wednesday, January 23.  Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Students should write at least one or two new scenes each day in order to finish on time.

Math: We practiced estimating division problems today. Our average class progress is 59%, with a goal of 97% by January 25. Some students are very behind. Ask your student to show you their progress. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We read more about how people can cause water shortages by polluting water, overuse, or overpopulating drought-prone areas.

Social Studies: We finished reading about the Pilgrims and Puritans today..

Spelling: We finished our class spelling bee today. Congratulations to our class finalists: James and Donald!

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students continued to draft their adventure story.

Math: We practiced how to divide factors of 10 today. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We wrote some notes about water and started to read about how water shortages are created.

Social Studies: Today was our Dia De Los Reyes activities. This is the traditional gift giving day in Mexico. Today, the “Kings” brought everyone fruit snacks as gifts.

Spelling: We started our class spelling bee today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.  

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students worked on the introduction page of their adventure story. We looked at some examples and noticed a pattern: the introduction told who the main character was, where they were, and what their mission was.

Math: Students took Quiz 1 about multiplication in Khan Academy. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We learned that 71% of the earth is covered with water, but only a small fraction is freshwater.

Social Studies: We read about the Mayflower Compact and compared the Pilgrims to the Jamestown settlers.

Spelling: We practiced writing contractions and possessive pronouns, learning when to use an apostrophe: it’s/its, there’s/theirs.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.  

Reading: We took a MobyMax reading assessment today.

Writing: Students had prewriting conferences today, sharing their Bubbl.us prewriting created yesterday. We also started the first page of our story using a Google Site.

This Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook project is due Wednesday, January 23.  Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Students should finish their Bubbl.us prewriting tonight if it’s not finished yet, and it would be a good idea to continue to work on the first page of their writing in their Google Site.
