Class activities for Tuesday, January 7

Spelling: We reviewed diagraphs, which are two letters that form one new sound: ch, th, sh, ph, wh. This will be the skill tested on Thursday’s spelling test.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 45-47 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: We read a realistic fiction story about someone helping during tornados and hurricanes by donating supplies.

Writing: Students started drafting their Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook. They created a Google Site and started working on the introduction page. We talked about how each page of this story is a scene, and balanced scenes have a mixture of talking, action, and visual details. Each page should have all three of these story details.

Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Students should we working on the first page of their Google Site or starting the second page of their story.

This project is due Wednesday, January 22. Some ideas and resources are below:

Choose Your Own Adventure Resources

Math: We used MobyMax Math to practice multiplication again today. We are up to 22 students finished with the one-digit multiplication lesson; only 6 more students to go! Most of the class is now working on two-digit multiplication. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Students wrote a scientific explanation about how a gecko could see its prey and they recognize if it was safe to eat. Homework is to finish notebook p. 60 if not done in class.

Social Studies: We used this time to learn about the Mexican tradition of Dia de los Reyes – the Day of the Kings. The “Three Kings” visited our classroom and left fruit snacks in the shoes that students left by their desks.

Character Strength: We are learning about optimism this week.

Notes:

  • Tomorrow is a late start day; school begins at 11 am.
  • Family Math and Science Night is January 30 from 5:30-7:00 pm. Lots of fun experiments, math games, and free hot dogs! Please come!

Reading: We started a new topic and read a realistic fiction story about helping our communities.

Writing: Today, students continued to prewrite their Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook using Bubbl.us again to planning their story and where choices will happen.

In this project, students will write a fiction adventure story with choices that the reader can make. Each choice can change how the story turns out. Students will publish their adventure as a website at Google Sites. See below for more details. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Students should finish their Bubbl.us prewriting map to they are ready to begin drafting tomorrow.

Science: We used a model to show how an organism uses light to see an object and then uses its memories to recognize what to do with the object.

Social Studies: We reviewed our rights and responsibilities as Americans.

Character Strength: We are learning about optimism this week.
