Class activities for Tuesday, January 14

Tuesday, January 14th, 2020

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 48-50 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: Students completed a STAR Reading test today.

Writing: We looked at more scenes from adventure stories to notice how the endings were written and how the scenes were balanced with talking, action, and visual details.

Students continued drafting their Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook. The goal is to write a new page every day, with a minimum of seven pages for this project. If a student writes one page at school and home each day, they will end up with 14 pages!

Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Students should be drafting their Google Site adventure story and should have at least six pages completed by now.

This project is due Wednesday, January 22. Some ideas and resources are below:

Math: None today due to art. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: None today due to extra social studies.

Social Studies: We wrote a summary of the Bill of Rights. We also read about some fictional scenarios and determined which rights were being taken away.

Character Strength: We are learning about prudence this week.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 48-50 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: We read a biography about Nelson Mandela and started to read another biography about someone that protested about coal mine pollution in West Virginia.

Writing: We talked about writing “inner story” details, which are the thoughts and feelings of characters. These things are inside the character’s head, but the writing can tell the reader how the characters are feeling. Sometimes action details can be added to show how the characters act when they feel certain emotions.

Science: We used a simulation to model how different types of eyes need different amounts of light to see. Low sensitivity eyes need more light, and high sensitivity eyes need less light to see. Homework is to finish pp. 75-78 if not done in class.

Social Studies: We wrote more notes about what limited governments are like.

Character Strength: We are learning about prudence this week.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We looked at more scenes from some Choose Your Own Adventure stories and some bad endings

Math: We worked on MobyMax Math again today, focusing on one and two-digit multiplication. Most students are now finished with one-digit multiplication skills and are practicing two-digit multiplication at this time. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We read about how animals active during the day have eyes that can see colors in bright light. Animals active at night have eyes that can see low light, but not see colors well.

Social Studies: Today was a leader lesson about beginning with the end in mind and setting goals.

Character Strength: We are learning about optimism this week.

Spelling: Today was a spelling and skill test.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 45-47 are available and are due tomorrow.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We looked more scenes from some Choose Your Own Adventure stories and also some endings. We noticed that endings:

  • Say “The End” at the bottom of the page.
  • Have lots of action details.
  • Can be good, neutral, or bad. Bad endings result in death! Neutral endings cause the player to lose, but still remain alive.

Spelling: Today was the school spelling bee! Congratulations to our room finalists, Yousef and Jaxon. Jaxon will move on to the district spelling bee!

Tomorrow will be a spelling test.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 45-47 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: Students worked on MobyMax Reading Stories and Foundational Reading today.

Writing: We looked at the beginnings of some Choose Your Own Adventure stories and learned they write about these things on the first page:

  • Who the first character is, where they are at, what skills they have
  • The problem of the story
  • The main character at an interesting place start the action right away
