Spelling: We reviewed rules for capital letters today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: We continued to read our shared reading book, Esperanza Rising.

Writing: Students worked on drafting for their current piece of writing.  The first piece of writing, a personal narrative, will be due on Friday, September 21.

Math: We reviewed fractions and decimals today. Students also learned how to convert a fraction into a decimal by dividing. For example, the fraction 3/5 is 3 divided by 5. Standard division can be used to divide to arrive at a decimal answer. Math book p. 8 has a review of converting fractions into decimals.

Homework is to finish Journal P1-2.

Science: We reviewed matter and energy today, ideas we learned in fourth grade.

Social Studies: None today due to a scheduled math skills time.

Constitution Day is Monday, September 17. Learn why are country doesn’t have kings, how we started the Revolution, and the Preamble to the Constitution.

Our Mission:

Reading: We started reading our shared reading books, Esperanza Rising. This is a story we started last year and will continue this year.

Writing: Students made authority lists today of things that they know about, places they’ve been, or other topics that they are familiar with. Students also started prewriting today.  The first piece of writing, a personal narrative, will be due on Friday, September 21.

Math: We continued to a review of place value and ways to write numbers (word form, expanded, standard form).  Homework is to finish Journal P1-1.

Science: We reviewed matter and energy today, ideas we learned in fourth grade.

Social Studies: Constitution Day is Monday, September 17. In observance, we started to learn about the freedoms our Constitution gives to us, and we watched some SchoolHouse Rock video clips about why are country doesn’t have kings, how we started the Revolution, and the Preamble to the Constitution.

Spelling: Students completed a Spelling Achievement Test today, which will serve as a pretest.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students completed a STAR Reading test today.

Writing: Students received writer’s folders today. We’ll begin the first writing piece this week.

Math: We talking about the idea of homework today. Homework in math is common. Why do it? Why not skip it and just play games, watch TV, or play with friends?

Homework isn’t always fun, but there are good reasons for doing it:

• Older students and adults have homework, for school or for work one day.
• Sometimes there is not enough time to finish a task at school.
• People who practice get better, smarter and faster when they have to repeat the task later.

To prove the last point, I had everyone make an origami bird. But I only have the directions to some of the students. The ones with the directions make the bird quickly and correctly, the other ones just had to guess and weren’t successful. Later, even when I took the directions away, the ones that had practice could make the origami bird again quickly. Practice helps!

Science: We played a game to review electricity and magnetism ideas from fourth grade.

Social Studies: We played a game to review economics ideas from fourth grade.

We wrapped up our opening week tasks today:

• Today was Team Day! Students worked in teams to solve challenges. The class did well persevering through difficulties and not giving up. All the challenges were solved! Thanks to all the family members that helped today.
• We created a list of Top Teamwork Tricks.
• Students received a lot of folders, books, notebooks and other gear.
