Class activities for Thursday, October 6

Spelling: None today due to the Late Start day.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 18-20 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. Students also completed a fiction reading test.

Writing: Today we talked about using details to support the writing and prove what it says. If a writer says something is fun, exciting or scary, prove it! Add details!

A personal narrative is due into portfolios on Friday, October 14. Students should be revising by looking back at their writing and finding ways to make it even better.

Math: We started to learn about the meaning of division. Homework is to finish Math Book pp. 21-22, problems 5-12.

Science: None today due to the Late Start day.

The Energy Fair (more details here) is tomorrow, October 7.

Social Studies: None today due to the Late Start day.

Spelling: Students continued to work on their Words to Learn lists today. This is a list of words missed on the last spelling test. Since words in fourth grade are used more than once, this is your student’s customized spelling list. If they practice these words, they will know them when they see them again. Some students are still working on their Words to Learn list and will be able to bring it home tomorrow. Ask your student if they can show you their list!

Cursive: Cursive pp. 18-20 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on questioning as a reading strategy.

Writing: Today was a work day in writing. A personal narrative is due into portfolios on Friday, October 14. Students should be ready to start revising by looking back at their story and finding ways to make it even better.

Math: We learned about looking for patterns when solving problems. Homework is to finish Math Journal P1-5.

Science: Students searched the room for magnetic objects and also created a minibook to record notes in.

The Energy Fair (more details here) is Friday, October 7.

Social Studies: None today due to Math Skills and Accelerated Reader time. Our class is up to 373,029 Energy Points at Khan Academy. Ask your student what they are working on lately!

Spelling: Students worked on their Words to Learn lists today. This is a list of words missed on the last spelling test. Since words in fourth grade are used more than once, this is your student’s customized spelling list. If they practice these words, they will know them when they see them again. Some students are still working on their Words to Learn list and will be able to bring it home tomorrow.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 18-20 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. Students talked with their book groups and shared questions, passages, illustrations and connections about the book.

Writing: None today due to our technology time.

A personal narrative is due into portfolios on Friday, October 14. Students should be completing their draft at this point.

Math: We practiced the distributive property by breaking apart larger problems: 7 * 13 = (7 * 10) + (7 * 3). Homework is to finish Math Journal P1-4 (even-numbered problems).

Science: None today due to our Math Skills time. Students are studying at Khan Academy. Ask your student how many badges and energy points they’ve earned!

Social Studies: We continued to learn about the market economy. Today we learned that a market economy includes private property rights and voluntary exchange. The government doesn’t own all the property, tools and factories in our economy, and no one is forced to buy or sell anything.

Spelling: Students completed a spelling and skill test today.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 18-20 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Students received new Literature Circles today. During Literature Circles, students read books with a good group, and write notes in their Literature Circles notebooks. On alternating days, students share their responses with their group. Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We talked about focusing on a theme by sticking to just one important topic in a piece of writing.

A personal narrative is due into portfolios on Friday, October 14. Students should be drafting at this point.

Math: Students completed a MiniQuiz today about multiplication properties. Homework is to finish Math Book p. 15, 10-15.

Science: Students completed a MiniQuiz today about data collection and analysis. Students also completed an experiment about what objects are magnetic. Homework is to finish the Magnetic Properties experiment.

Social Studies: We started learning about the market economy of the United States.

Spelling: We reviewed short and long vowel sounds today, which will be the skill tested on Monday’s spelling test. Check the Spelling page for the yearly list of spelling words (there is no list given out before each test).

Cursive: Cursive pp. 15-17 were due today.

Reading: Today was our first discussion day in Literature Circles. Students share with their group the questions, connections, illustrations and passages they noted from the book they read.

Writing: We talked about how important it is to focus a story on just the best time. For example, a student might write a story about how horrible the school lunch food is. Their story can focus only on lunch, and they can skip talking about breakfast, the bus ride, or recess. Focusing on a specific time helps a writer stick to just the best parts.

A personal narrative is due into portfolios on Friday, October 14. Students should be drafting at this point.

Math: None today due to STAR Friday..

Science: We finished Science Court today. There will be MiniQuiz over collecting data on Monday.

Social Studies: Students worked in groups to solve a puzzle about economics.
