Class activities for Thursday, September 20

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

Spelling: None today due to a math MiniQuiz about rays, lines and line segments. Students have the Unit 1 spelling worksheets (download here), which will be due at the time of the spelling test. Find more information, including spelling lists, by clicking on the Spelling link.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 19-20 are available and due Friday.

Reading: None today due to taking extra time for math. The class is struggling right now with using time wisely, and in this case, we had to repeat a task numerous times because the class wasn’t using math thinking to answer math questions.

Writing: Students finished their piece of writing about honesty and shared it with a neighbor. We then started planning another piece of writing about caring for the earth. Students started this by making a list of possible stories to write about.

Students received a manila folder today. This is their Writer’s Portfolio. Students were asked to decorate the portfolio with pictures, magazine clippings, stickers, drawings, anything that can lay flat. Homework is to have the portfolios decorated and returned on Monday.

Math: We used straws and twist ties to make angles, triangles and various quadrangles. The class struggled during this time to connect math thinking with math answers. The students would do the math, but then not connect the math results to a math answer, so their answer would be wrong. This was the case with squares and rectangles. We learned that a rectangle has four sides and four right angles. When asked if a square is a rectangle, the class repeatedly said no, even when they said a square has four sides and four right angles! This is where the failure to connect math thinking to math answers came in. Homework is to complete Journal p. 6 and to also write an explanation to prove why a square is a rectangle (this because of the problem in class).

Science: None today due to library. We are testing our Mentos and Diet Coke experiments tomorrow; thank you to volunteered to bring in supplies to help with the experiment.

Social Studies: We learned about the long growing season of the Southeast. Homework is to finish the Fact or Fiction paper, questions 1-4.

Behavior Update:

  • Orange magnets: 0
  • Red magnets: 0

Establish justice, insure domestic tranquility,
Provide for the common defense,
Promote the general welfare and
Secure the blessings of liberty
To ourselves and our posterity
Do ordain and establish this Constitution
For the United States of America.

Here’s the song:

Class activities for Friday, September 14

Friday, September 14th, 2007

Spelling: Today we talked about homographs, words that are spelled the same but pronounce differently (wind, does, use) and homophones, words that are pronounced the same but spelled differently (their and there, it’s and its).  Students have the Unit 1 spelling worksheets (download here), which will be due at the time of the spelling test. Find more information, including spelling lists, by clicking on the Spelling link.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 14-17 were due today.

Reading: We practiced asking questions as we read, and remembered that rereading helps us find information that we may have forgotten.

Writing: We again practiced making lists of writing topics and then learned to “stretch out” the lists by picking one topic from the list and writing everything we can remember about the topic.

Math: We played a game as a beginning-of-the-year math review.

Science: We watched a video showing geyers created with Mentos and Diet Coke. This got us thinking about ways to change the experiment to use different kids of liquids and different kinds of candies. Several students volunteered to bring in materials for us to test the Mentos and Diet Coke geyers next Friday.
