Class activities for Thursday, February 28 and Friday, February 29

Spelling: Yesterday, students added the th suffix to number words (forty to fortieth). Today students practiced their spelling words.

Cursive: No new cursive assignment this week.

Reading: Yesterday was a reading day and today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Yesterday and today were editing days. Today we talked about keeping a balance between general and specific information. A piece of fiction is due Monday, March 3.

Math: Yesterday, students took a math test over these concepts:

  • metric measurement
  • decimal addition and subtraction
  • comparing and ordering decimals
  • metric unit conversion

Science: Students worked on shadow puppet plays yesterday; none today.

Social Studies: None yesterday; today we started exploring a website focused on the Underground Railroad.

Spelling: We shuffled letters to change words into new words.

Cursive: No new cursive assignment this week.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on chunking unfamiliar words to make them easier to read.

Writing: Today was an editing day. Due to the prevalence of poor behavior choices throughout the day, we only had time to read and discuss a picture book, Scarecrow, by Cynthia Rylant. A piece of fiction is due February 29.

Math: We played a game to practice for the math test tomorrow. The test will assess:

  • metric measurement
  • decimal addition and subtraction
  • comparing and ordering decimals
  • metric unit conversion

Science: We reviewed the shadows experiment from earlier in the week.

Social Studies: Students made new minibooks for both the Underground Railroad and Europeans Arrive in Michigan.

Spelling: We reviewed the idea that suffixes added to the end of base words create a new word.

Cursive: No new cursive assignment yet.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on questioning as a reading strategy.

Writing: Today was an editing day. A piece of fiction is due February 29.

Math: Students visited stations to practice metric measurement, decimal addition and subtraction, and metric unit conversion. Homework is for students to create to at least two of each of these problems and have a parent sign the paper after checking:

  • metric measurement (draw and measure two lines)
  • decimal addition and subtraction
  • metric unit conversion (e.g., change meters into centimeters)

Science: None today due to the social studies test.

Social Studies: Students completed a test over the first people of Michigan.

Spelling: Most students completed their Words to Learn spelling list today; some will need to stay in at lunch to finish.

Cursive: No new cursive assignment yet.

Reading: Today was a reading and discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: None due to technology. A piece of fiction is due February 29.

Math: Students started a practice test today. Homework is to finish the practice test.

Science: Students completed an experiment on shadows. Some students didn’t allow for enough time to observe how the size of a shadow changes, so homework is to use a light at home to redo the experiment and answer the analyze and conclude questions.

Social Studies: A test over the first people of Michigan will be tomorrow.
