Class activities for Friday, May 30

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Spelling: Today was a preview of upcoming spelling words.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of at least seven words each are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students continued to work on the final writing project of the year, a compare and contrast piece called Find It, Decide It. Today, students continued to look for information to help them make their decision, and also started to type their paper.

An overview of the project:
Students will work with a partner to make a decision (which CD to buy, which restaurant to go to, which vacation to take, which game to buy, which book to read, which movie to watch). Students will use the internet to find information to help them make their decision, and MrHowd.com Google Docs (docs.mrhowd.com) or Sites (sites.mrhowd.com) will be used to collaborate on the project.

Math: Students were given some additional time to use differently-shaped pattern blocks to determine fractions in an assignment from yesterday. Students also completed a MiniQuiz over fractions of sets and pattern block fractions.

Science: We reviewed last week’s experiment about the water cycle and, in Health, students made posters about the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, cocaine and inhalants.

Social Studies: None on Fridays.

Spelling: We practiced proofreading and correcting for spelling, punctuation and word use errors.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of at least seven words each are due Friday.

Reading: None today due to a slushie party in the courtyard for a student’s birthday.

Writing: Students continued to work on the final writing project of the year, a compare and contrast piece called Find It, Decide It. Today, students continued to refine their questions and started to look for information to help them make their decision. Students should have their questions finalized by tomorrow in order to have enough time to finish their project.

Math: Students used differently-shaped pattern blocks  to determine fractions. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 196-198.

Science: None today due to viewing an episode of A Pet Story from Animal Planet about “Gabe and Izzy,” a dog and its owner who both have disabilities. We will have an assembly next week featuring Gabe and Izzy.

Social Studies: Students completed a test today over these concepts:

  • Northwest Ordinance of 1787
  • Michigan becomes a territory
  • War of 1812
  • Erie Canal
  • Pioneers
  • Toledo War

Spelling: Students completed a spelling and skill test today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of at least seven words each are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups practiced synthesizing and determining importance as reading strategies.

Writing: Students continued to work on the final writing project of the year, a compare and contrast piece called Find It, Decide It. Today, partners were selected and groups worked on the question they would like to answer.

Math: We reviewed “fractions of” problems and started working with addition and subtraction of fractions. Homework is to finish Math Boxes 7.2, not including box 4.

Spelling: We reviewed rules for making plural nouns: berry/berries, dog/dogs, box/boxes, sheep/sheep, mouse/mice. This will be the skill test for tomorrow’s spelling test.

Math: We practiced solving “fractions of” problems, such as 1/3 of 12 or 2/5 of 20. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 193-194.

Science: We watched a DVD clip to see that the sun is really a small star compared to some in our galaxy (Betelgeuse is 600 times the size of the sun). See below for a chart of star sizes:


Social Studies: We learned that a compromise was reached in the Toledo War that gave the Toledo strip to Ohio the Upper Peninsula to Michigan. With this resolved, Michigan became a state in 1837.

Spelling: We learned rules for making plural nouns: berry/berries, dog/dogs, box/boxes, sheep/sheep, mouse/mice.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of at least seven words each are due Friday; this week’s assignment is due on Tuesday.

Reading: None today due to the Space Fashion Show.

Writing: None today due to the Space Fashion Show.

Math: None due to a STAR reading test and a Character Education survey.

Science: Today was the Space Fashion Show. Five classes watched us perform and the students did a great job writing their scripts with information and creativity, reading the scripts with enthusiasm, dressing up as their space objects! Look for pictures soon.

Social Studies: We learned that Michigan’s petition to become a state was at first denied due to the Toledo War.
