Spelling: None today due to prewriting conferences.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.

Reading: Three Literature Circles groups performed their plays today, and the last group will perform Monday.

Writing: Students had prewriting conferences this morning for their Choose Your Own Adventure fiction stories. They also continued drafting their stories on their websites at sites.mrhowd.com. This piece will be due February 13. An example of the Choose Your Own Adventure genre can be found here and here.

Math: None today.

Science: Students completed a magnets science test today.

Social Studies: None today. Monday, we will take a “tour of Michigan” and each team will teach the class about their assigned features of Michigan.

Spelling: None today due to math facts tests.

Cursive: We’ve finished our review of the upper and lowercase cursive alphabet. For the remainder of the year, students’ weekly assignment will consist of 10 cursive sentences, with seven or more words each, due on Fridays.

Reading: Literature Circles groups continued to practice reading plays from their magazines, using good voice and expression. Two groups performed their plays today, and the remainder of the groups will perform tomorrow.

Writing: Students created their own Choose Your Own Adventure websites today at sites.mrhowd.com. They also started their draft of a Choose Your Own Adventure fiction story. This piece will be due February 13. An example of the Choose Your Own Adventure genre can be found here and here.

Math: We reviewed showing fractions with base 10 blocks and moved to linking fractions and decimals. Homework is to finish Journal p. 80.

Science: We wrote notes about magnets in our minibooks and reviewed for the magnets science test, which will be tomorrow.

Social Studies: Groups continued to work on their Tour of Michigan scripts and their “windows.” Tomorrow, we will take a “tour of Michigan” and each team will teach the class about their assigned features of Michigan. Homework is to finish up scripts and illustrated “windows.”

Cursive: We’ve finished our review of the upper and lowercase cursive alphabet. For the remainder of the year, students’ weekly assignment will consist of 10 cursive sentences, with seven or more words each.

Reading: Literature Circles groups continued to practice reading plays from their magazines, using good voice and expression.

Writing: Today was the final prewriting day for the next piece of writing, a Choose Your Own Adventure fiction story. This piece will be published on a website and will be due February 13. An example of the Choose Your Own Adventure genre can be found here and here. Students should have a plan on how they want their adventure story to turn out, and today we talked about having at least one good ending, and some okay or even bad endings.

Mrs. Houser also taught a lesson today on using inner story, “thoughtshots” and thinking in stories.

Math: We reviewed showing fractions with base 10 blocks and progressed to showing base 10 blocks when given a fraction name. Next, we’ll link fractions to decimals without using base 10 blocks. Homework is to finish Journal p. 82.

Science: Students made a compass with a magnetized needle (a stretched-out paperclip magnetized with a magnet). The needle was floated on a paper leaf and rotated to point in a north-south direction. Homework is to complete the Magnet Investigation Review.

Social Studies: None due to library.

Spelling: Students made their Words to Learn lists today from words they missed on their last spelling test. This is their custom spelling list to study for the next test.

Cursive: We’ve finished our review of the upper and lowercase cursive alphabet. For the remainder of the year, students’ weekly assignment will consist of 10 cursive sentences, with seven or more words each.

Reading: Today Literature Circles groups practiced reading plays from their magazines.

Writing: Today was a prewriting day for the next piece of writing, a Choose Your Own Adventure fiction story. This piece will be published on a website and will be due February 13. Homework is to plan a list of choices that will be in the adventure story.

Math: We started a review of fractions and decimals, focusing today on showing fractions with base 10 blocks and naming the fractions. Representing fractions with base 10 blocks appeared to be a struggle for most students, so this is an area that almost everyone can improve upon. We’ll continue to work on this more tomorrow. Homework is to finish Journal p. 81.

Science: We learned about the north and south poles of a magnet, that opposite poles attract, and that earth is a giant magnet. We also used a compass to identify unmarked poles of magnets.

Social Studies: Teams worked on their tour guide script of Michigan. Students also received paper to draw and color a “window” displaying one of their assigned features of Michigan. Homework is to finish drawing and coloring their “window.”

Spelling: Today was the Unit 6 spelling and skill test.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 62 and 64 were due today. We’ve finished our review of the upper and lowercase cursive alphabet. For the remainder of the year, students’ weekly assignment will consist of 10 cursive sentences, with seven or more words each.

Reading: Today Literature Circles groups practiced reading plays from their magazines.

Writing: Today was a publishing day for the students’ next piece of fiction, due today. Students also started prewriting for their own Choose Your Own Adventure fiction story, which will be the next piece of writing due February 13. Look for more information on this next week.

Math: Students completed a test about these concepts:

  • Multiplication and division facts;
  • Number stories;
  • Number sentences (true/false, with parentheses, solve for the missing number); and,
  • Logic problems.

Science: We completed an experiment today about locating hidden magnets. Each team was given a posterboard folder containing two magnets. Teams used iron objects, a compass, and iron filings, to find the location of the hidden magnets.

Social Studies: None today.
