Class activities for Tuesday, April 14

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Spelling: We reviewed the use of an apostrophe to show ownership and in contractions, and we learned that possessive pronouns do not use apostrophes to show ownership.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on chunking as a reading strategy.

Writing: Students continued to collect research for their I-Search research project (click here for more details).

Math: We worked on estimating products today. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 122-124 if not finished in class.

Science: We reviewed for tomorrow’s science test about electricity, electrical safety, and weather safety.

Social Studies: We continued learning about European explorers and working on an alphabet soup organizer. This will be due on Thursday.

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

For our half day before Spring Break, we created a spring showcase featuring paper bag baseball gloves.

Students also prepared a final copy of their novel, created accounts at Lulu.com, and uploaded their novels. Most students are still designing their covers. We will spend another day after break to finish this project. Students can also work on this over break.

Students might also want to spend some time collecting more research for their I-Search research project (click here for more details).

Reading: None today due to finishing a presentation in Science.

Science: Students were shown a presentation today about spotting and identifying severe weather, including tornadoes and funnel clouds. View the presentation below:

Social Studies: We started a new unit on the Europeans arriving in Michigan. Students made new minibooks and started an Alphabet Soup organizer.

Spelling: None today due to finishing some math from yesterday.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays; this week’s assignment is due Thursday.

Reading: Students received new Literature Circles magazines today to practice informational reading strategies.

Writing: Students continued to collect research for their I-Search research project (click here for more details). We also went to the library today to locate books, and students created accounts on Bubbl.us to create mind maps and webs.

Math: Students continued to work on estimating sums. Math was shortened today due to an assembly on Alaska and sled dog mushing.

Science: The final two groups presented their Wicked Weather melodramas today and we took notes on how to stay safe in severe weather.

Social Studies: None due to library.
