Class activities for Friday, November 19

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Spelling: None today due to the half day schedule.

    Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

    Reading: Students started working on Literature Circles projects with the goal of sharing their books with the class. Groups will continue to work on this project next week.

    Writing: Today was a revising day in writing. Some students starting revising conferences with a partner.

    Our next piece of writing, a fiction piece, is due Monday, November 29. Students should be revising at this time.

    Math: None today due to the half day schedule.

    Science: We continued to learn about inherited traits (from parents) and acquired traits (learned from the environment).

    Social Studies: None today due to the half day schedule. We will be having a test over European Explorers soon. Here’s an online study guide.

    Thursday, November 18th, 2010

    Spelling: We talked about “ditching” words that are unnecessary in sentences:

    • Move backward, not…Move backwards.
    • Until then, I was fine. Not…Up until then, I was fine.
    • I don’t know whether I’ll eat yogurt or pancakes, not…if I’ll eat or whether or not I’ll eat.

    Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

    Reading: The class finished their Literature Circles books this week. Students will next be creating projects to share their books with the class.

    Writing: We talked about not combining multiple sentences into one chunk of run-on sentences. Putting periods in between, and taking out connecting words helps to make individual sentences.

    Our next piece of writing, a fiction piece, is due Monday, November 29. Students should be revising at this time.

    Math: We have been working on drawing and measuring angles using a protractor.

    Science: We reviewed inherited traits and started to learning about learned traits that aren’t acquired from parents.

    Social Studies: We will be having a test over European Explorers soon. Here’s an online study guide.

    Class activities for Tuesday, November 16

    Spelling: We reviewed compound words and common spelling patterns for the /k/ sound: k, ke, ck.

    Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

    Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

    Writing: None today due to Technology.

    Our next piece of writing, a fiction piece, is due Monday, November 29. Students should be drafting at this time.

    Math: Students practiced using a protractor to measure the degrees of an angle. Homework is to complete Journal pp. 71, 73 and worksheet p. 244.

    Science: We reviewed the reproductive system and how traits of parents and grandparents can be inherited by the offspring.

    Social Studies: We reviewed the changes in Europe around the 1500s that affected the exploration of the New World. We also reviewed the Social Studies notebook reading notes from this chapter.

    Monday, November 15th, 2010

    Spelling: None today.

    Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

    Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

    Writing: We talked about using a consistent tense in writing. Most writers use the past tense; but whatever tense is used, it’s important to use the same tense in a writing piece.

    Our next piece of writing, a fiction piece, is due Monday, November 29. Students should be drafting at this time.

    Math: Students were introduced to using a protractor to measure the degrees of an angle.

    Science: We reviewed the function of various body systems today.

    Social Studies: We continued to learn about some changes that happened in Europe in the 1400s and 1500s that affected the exploration of the New World:

    1. Spain was reconquered from Muslim control and put under Christian rule;
    2. Spain financed Christopher Columbus’ trip to the New World;
    3. Martin Luther started the Reformation of the Roman Church and religious wars ensued;
    4. Protestant and Catholic countries warred against each other and tried to create state religions.

    Today, we discussed why religious wars happened after Martin Luther protested against the Roman Church.
