Class activities for Friday, May 20

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students completed an informational reading test today.

Writing: Students published their I-Search presentations into their portfolios and continued to work on poetry. A collection of poems is due into portfolios on Monday, May 23.

Math: Students completed a MiniQuiz today about multiplying fractions.

Science: We did an experiment to model the distances of the planets in the solar system.

Social Studies: We learned about the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and the Intolerable Acts. Homework is to finish Notebook p. 57 if not done in class.

Class activities for Thursday, May 19

Spelling: We reviewed common spelling patterns for the /ou/ sound: ou, ow.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: None today due to extra time with Spelling.

Writing: We learned about using repetition in poetry to create music. Students also continued to work on their poetry. A collection of poems is due into portfolios on Monday, May 23.

Math: Students were introduced to the concept of dividing with fractions.

Science: Today was race day for the Jet Toy Challenge! Our class didn’t receive the top spots, but we took third, fourth and many of the middle positions. We may have had the highest combined total distance. Great work, engineers!

Social Studies: None today.

Spelling: Students made Words to Learn lists by correcting the words missed on the last spelling test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students continued to work on their poetry. A collection of poems is due into portfolios on Monday, May 23.

Math: We reviewed how to use area models and multiplication to multiply fractions. We also reviewed multiplying fractions by whole numbers. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 273-275.

Science: We started to learn about what causes seasons. Today, we thought about if distance from the sun causes seasons. Homework is to finish the Science Court part 1 page.

Social Studies: None today due to library.

Spelling: Today was a preview of upcoming spelling words.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We talked about using line breaks to create white space in poems.

Students also continued to work on their poetry today. A collection of poems is due into portfolios on Monday, May 23.

Math: We reviewed multiplying fractions using area models and multiplication formulas. Homework is to complete Journal pp. 268-271.

Science: None today due to an extra Social Studies time.

Social Studies: We learned about several laws passed by Great Britain that angered the colonists:

  • Proclamation of 1763: colonists couldn’t move beyond the Appalachian Mountains
  • Quartering Act: colonists had to feed and house soldiers
  • Stamp Act: colonists had to pay taxes on printed papers.

Homework is to finish Notebook p. 56 if not done in class.
