Class activities for Friday, May 13

Friday, May 13th, 2011

Spelling: Students completed a spelling and skill test today.

    Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

    Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

    Writing: We talked about using whitespace in poems: space around the words so the reader sees certain words rather than just writing to the edge of the page.

    Students also continued to work on their poetry today. A collection of poems is due into portfolios on Monday, May 23.

    Math: None due to STAR Friday.

    Science: Students worked on an experiment about balanced and unbalanced forces. Homework is to finish Activity 81 and the analysis.

    Social Studies: None today.

    Class activities for Thursday, May 12

    Spelling: We reviewed common spelling patterns for the /er/ and /le/ sounds. This will be the skill tested on tomorrow’s spelling and skill test.

      Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

      Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

      Writing: We looked at a fragment poem today, which was a poem of short lines (two to three words) describing a subject. Students also continued to work on their poetry. A collection of poems is due into portfolios on Monday, May 23.

      Math: None today.

      Science: Today was the final test day for the Jet Toy Challenge. The race will be next Thursday.

      Social Studies: We learned about how the American Colonists became angry with Great Britain by comparing the situation to something that happened to us:

      • We had a field trip planned to share poetry at Borders.
      • The office cancelled our field trip, saying that all field trip money must be used to pay for 5th grade camp.
      • The class became frustrated because of this new decision.
      • This situation was similar to Great Britain enforcing new, harsher laws against the Colonists, leading the Colonists to grow upset.

      Spelling: We learned about subject-verb agreement today:

      • The eagle is flying, not the eagle are flying.
      • The eagles are flying, not the eagles is flying.

      Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

      Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

      Writing: Students worked on prewriting for their poetry today. A collection of poems is due into portfolios on Monday, May 23.

      Math: We practiced finding the fraction of numbers today, and learned about finding the fraction of fractions. Homework is Journal pp. 265-267.

      Science: None today due to library.

      Social Studies: Students completed a Social Studies test today.

      Spelling: None today.

      Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

      Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

      Writing: Students emailed their persuasive writing letters to their state senators and representatives.

      Students are also working on completing a collection of poems, which will be due into portfolios on Monday, May 23.

      Math: We reviewed adding and subtracting mixed numbers today.

      Science: We learned about actions have equal and opposite reactions, Newton’s Third Law.

      Social Studies: We reviewed for a future test about Colonial America. Here is an online study guide for the test.

      Spelling: We reviewed rules for plural nouns today.

      Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

      Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

      Writing: We talked about how to make a story into a poem by adding imagery, music or emotion. Students also worked on their collection of poems, which will be due into portfolios on Monday, May 23.

      Math: Students worked on subtracting mixed numbers. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 256-259.

      Science: We learned about how force is related to mass and acceleration (f=ma).

      Social Studies: We learned about the Great Awakening in Colonial America. Homework is to finish Notebook p. 54.
