Class activities for Tuesday, October 18

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Spelling: None today due to the Math MEAP test.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 24-26 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Three groups presented a project about their Literature Circles books. Students also completed a STAR Reading test for October.

Writing: None today due to our technology time.

A personal narrative, slightly fictionalized, is due into portfolios on Friday, November 4. Students should be prewriting at this time.

Math: None today due to the Math MEAP test.

Science: We talked about how the force of a magnet can go through almost any thin material, except steel.

Social Studies: None today due to the Math MEAP test.

Class activities for Monday, October 17

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Spelling: We reviewed common spelling patterns for the long i sound: i, i-consonant-e, igh, ind, y, and i (at the end of a syllable).

Cursive: Cursive pp. 24-26 are available and due Monday.

Reading: Today was the final day for groups to work on creating projects to share their Literature Circles books with the class.

Writing: We talked about using specific, interesting words when writing.

Students also started prewriting for their next piece of writing. A personal narrative, slightly fictionalized, is due into portfolios on Friday, November 4. Students should be prewriting at this time.

Math: We reviewed special quotients, such as dividing by 1, 0, or the same number as the dividend. Homework is to finish Journal R1-8 if not done in class.

Science: Students completed an experiment to test if the force of a magnet can go through different materials, such as paper, plastic, glass or steel. Homework is to finish the Pulling Through experiment if not done in class.

Social Studies: We acted out a simulation to show how business can sell goods to customers for money, and workers sell their time and work to businesses for money.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 21-23 are available and due Monday.

Reading: Groups worked on creating projects to share their Literature Circles books with the class.

Writing: Students completed a writing log entry based on the results of their last piece of writing. Today was also a publishing work day.

A personal narrative is due into portfolios on Monday, October 17. Students should be publishing at this point.

Math: We reviewed the idea that a number divided by zero is undefined.

Science: We reviewed our last experiment and learned that iron, steel, nickel and cobalt and the only metals that are magnetic.

Social Studies: Students completed a MiniQuiz about market economies. We also read the book, “Go Around Dollar” and learned about how money “goes around” or is exchanged many times from people to businesses or to other people. Homework is to finish the Go Around Dollar Chart if not done in class.

Spelling: None today due to students working on the Writing MEAP test.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 21-23 are available and due Friday.

Reading: None today due to students working on the Writing MEAP test.

Writing: None today due to students working on the Writing MEAP test.

A personal narrative is due into portfolios on Monday, October 17. Students should be editing by correcting spelling, capital letter and sentence sense mistakes.

Math: We learned about special quotients in division problems:

  • A number divided by 1 is that number (7 / 1 = 7)
  • A number divided by itself is 1 (8 / 8 = 1)
  • Zero divided by a number is zero ( 0 / 8 = 0)
  • A number divided by zero has no answer (8 / 0 = impossible)

Homework is to finish Journal  P1-8.

Science: Students tested different types of metal to see which ones were magnetic. Homework is to finish the Sticky Metals experiment if not done in class.

Social Studies: We finish taking notes about market economies.

Writing: Students worked on editing conferences today.

A personal narrative is due into portfolios on Monday, October 17. Students should be editing by correcting spelling, capital letter and sentence sense mistakes.

Math: We practiced multiplication and division fact families today. Homework is to finish Journal  P1-7.

Science: None today due to students working on the Reading MEAP test.

Social Studies: We talked about what is produced in a market economy and wrote notes in our minibooks.
