Class activities for Monday, November 21

Monday, November 21st, 2011

Spelling: We practiced identifying homophones and digraphs.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 39, 40, and 44 are available and due Monday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups practiced synthesizing the most important meaning as a reading strategy.

Writing: We talked about using breaking a text into paragraphs today. Students also worked on revising conferences today.

The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Monday, November 28. Students should be revising at this time.

Math: We reviewed the value of digits in different place values and learned that numbers next to each other differ by a factor of 10. Homework is to finish Journal P3-2.

Science: We reviewed our last experiment about using switches in circuits. We learned that circuits in which electricity is flowing are called closed circuits. Open circuits are those in which electricity cannot flow.

Social Studies: We reviewed these ideas:

  • Specialization happens when people or places become good and special jobs or skills; and,
  • Division of labor is a way to divide a job into steps in order to finish it better or faster.

Spelling: None today due to the half day schedule.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 36-38 were due today.

Reading: None today due to the half day schedule.

Writing: We talked about using visual details to describe what characters looked like. We also discussed the importance of describing new characters soon after they appear in a story.

The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Monday, November 28. Students should be revising at this time.

Math: None today due to the half day schedule.

Science: Students designed and created circuits using bulbs and motors turned on and off with switches. Homework is to finish the “Off or Off?” experiment.

Social Studies: None today due to the half day schedule.

Spelling: We learned that digraphs are two letters that combine to make a new sound. We practiced making words with these digraphs: ch, sh, ph, wh, th.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 36-38 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: None today due to the half day schedule.

Writing: We talked about how to punctuate dialogue correctly:

  1. Put quotation marks around just the words spoken.
  2. Use a comma or end mark to separate the dialogue from other parts of the sentence.
  3. Start a new paragraph when a new speaker begins talking.

Science: We started an experiment about designing switches in circuits.

Writing: None today due to our technology time.

The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Monday, November 28. Students should be drafting at this time.

Math: We practiced writing numbers in standard, expanded and word form, and finding the value of a digit. Homework  is to finish Journal P3-1.

Science: None today due to our Math Skills practice time.

Social Studies: We practiced identifying positive and negative incentives today. Homework is to finish the Identifying Incentives chart if not done in class.
