Class activities for Monday, November 14

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Spelling: None today due to students getting new seats.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 36-38 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on using context clues as a reading strategy.

Writing: We talked about making characters come to life using realistic dialogue, description of how they act, visual details, and action details that show the characters.

The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Monday, November 28. Students should be drafting at this time.

Math: We started to review place value. We also reviewed three ways to write a number:

  • Standard form: 358
  • Expanded form: 300+50+8
  • Word form: three hundred fifty-eight.

Homework is to finish Journal R3-1.

Science: We worked on cleaning our Courtyard Garden and getting it ready for the spring.

Social Studies: We reviewed positive and negative incentives today.

Spelling: We learned about “spelling surprises,” which are words that are spelled differently that expected. Common spelling patterns for the long e sound are e, ea, ee and y, but the word people is a spelling surprise, because it’s spelling pattern is eo.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 33-35 are available and due on Monday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Today was a drafting work day.

The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Monday, November 28. Students should be drafting at this time.

Math: None today due to STAR Friday.

Science: We talked about how to “repair” circuits that wouldn’t light a bulb.

Social Studies: We practiced identifying positive and negative incentives. Homework is to finish the Incentive Chart started in class.

Spelling: We reviewed common spelling patterns for the long e sound: e, ea, ee and y.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 33-35 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on making connections as a reading strategy.

Writing: We reviewed five essential details that should be in all stories:

  • Visual details (also called physical description)
  • Setting
  • Dialogue
  • Thinking
  • Character action

The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Monday, November 28. Students should be drafting at this time.

Math: Students completed a math test about patterns.

Science: We our last experiment about testing various types of circuits to see which ones would light a bulb.

Social Studies: We learned about positive and negative incentives.

Class activities for Wednesday, November 9

Spelling: Students continued to make their Words to Learn lists of words missed on the last spelling test.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 33-35 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on questioning as a reading strategy.

Writing: We talked about using a “BME Chart” for prewriting. This chart has three columns, one each for the beginning, middle and end. Students can list events that will happen throughout their story, helping to guide them during drafting.

Students also worked on prewriting conferences today. The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Monday, November 28. Students should be prewriting at this time.

Math: We reviewed for tomorrow’s math test over patterns. A practice test can be found on p. 60 in the Math book.

Science: We reviewed the Sparky’s Light Kit experiment the class completed recently. Homework is to finish the Repair Manual activity about explaining nonworking circuits.

Social Studies: None today due to a Reading and Math Skills time.

Spelling: We talked about usage of the it’s/its homophones:

  • It’s is a contraction and means it is. Example: It’s a nice day outside.
  • Its is possessive and means it has something. Example: The dog played with its toy.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 33-35 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on determining importance as a reading strategy.

Writing: We reviewed the idea that all stories have three important ingredients:

  • Characters
  • Plot
  • Setting

Students also worked on prewriting. The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Monday, November 28. Students should be prewriting at this time.

Math: We practiced solving problems using counters. Homework is to finish Journal P2-6.

Science: Students completed an experiment about testing different electrical circuits to see which ones would light a bulb. Homework is to finish the Path Finders experiment if not done in class.

Social Studies: Students completed a MiniQuiz today about supply, demand, price and competition.
