Class activities for Friday, October 26

Friday, October 26th, 2012

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on breaking large words into smaller parts to help with understanding.

Writing: Today was a work day in writing.

The next piece of writing, a fictionalized personal narrative, will be due on Friday, November 2. Students should be revising at this point.

Math: None today due to STAR Friday.

Science: We started an experiment to learn about the respiratory system.

Social Studies: We compared the differences between American Indian cultural regions. Homework is to finish Notebook pp. 18-19 that were started on Monday.

Spelling: We reviewed contractions today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We talked using details to change the speed of a story. Important scenes should have lots of dialogue, action and visual details. That will slow the scene down so the reader can understand what is happening. Less important scenes can move faster when the write includes fewer details.

The next piece of writing, a fictionalized personal narrative, will be due on Friday, November 2. Students should be revising at this point.

Math: We practiced estimating products today. Homework is to finish Journal P3-3.

Science: None today due to art.

Social Studies: We played a game to review the differences between American Indian cultural regions.

Spelling: None today due to the late start.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on synthesizing important information as a reading strategy.

Writing: We talked about using a double focus in a story. If a writer wanted to focus on summer break, they could also have a double focus of summer camp. This would help narrow the topic so that it is more manageable to write.

The next piece of writing, a fictionalized personal narrative, will be due on Friday, November 2. Students should be revising at this point.

Math: We practiced mental math multiplication today. Homework is to finish Journal P3-2.

Science: None today due to the late start.

Social Studies: None today due to the late start.

Spelling: Students made Words to Learn lists by correcting words missed on the last spelling test. This will be your student’s spelling list for the next test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading and discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We talked about the three most important ingredients for any story:

  1. Characters: all stories have characters. Authors give visual details about the important characters.
  2. Places: all stories have places and settings. Authors give visual details about the important places.
  3. Plot: all stories have action and a point. Many have a problem that the characters need to solve.

The next piece of writing, a fictionalized personal narrative, will be due on Friday, November 2. Students should be working on their drafts at this point.

Math: We reviewed multiplication properties today. Homework is to finish Journal P3-1.

Science: We wrote notes about the circulatory system.

Social Studies: None today due to our reading and math skills time.

Reading: None today due to a discussion of poor choices some people in our class made with the morning’s guest teacher.

Writing: None today due to our technology time.

The next piece of writing, a fictionalized personal narrative, will be due on Friday, November 2. Students should be working on their drafts at this point.

Math: Students completed a math test today about adding and subtracting decimals. 

Science: None today due to our math skills practice time. 

Social Studies: Students learned about the differences in culture of four different American Indian groups. Homework is to finish Notebook pp. 18-19 if not done in class.
