Class activities for Friday, October 19

Friday, October 19th, 2012

Spelling: Today was a preview of upcoming spelling words.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a free-choice reading day as some students were finishing reading testing in class.

Writing: Students continued to work on their drafts today.

The next piece of writing, a fictionalized personal narrative, will be due on Friday, November 2. Students should be working on their drafts at this point.

Math: None today due to STAR Friday.

A  math test about adding and subtracting decimals will be on Monday. A practice test can be found on pp. 58-59 of the math book.

Science: We wrote notes about the muscular system and started to learn about the circulatory system.

Social Studies: None today due to extra time with science.

Class activities for Thursday, October 18

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

Spelling: None today due to extra time working on writing.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on determining importance as a reading strategy.

Writing: We talked about using choice adjectives in writing. Adjectives answer the question, “What kind?”. What kind of car, house, or food? A red car, large house, or delicious food?

The next piece of writing, a fictionalized personal narrative, will be due on Friday, November 2. Students should be working on their drafts at this point.

Math: We reviewed for Monday’s math test about adding and subtracting decimals. A practice test can be found on pp. 58-59 of the math book.

Science: None today due to an extra time with social studies. We’ll have extra time for science tomorrow.

Social Studies: We learned and wrote notes about the American Indians of the Great Plains, Eastern Woodlands and Southeast. Homework is to finish the reading notes in Notebook pp. 16-17, if not done in class. Here’s what we learned about the different regions of the American Indians:

Spelling: None today due to the science MEAP test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: None today due to the science MEAP test.

Writing: We talked about the three most important details that every story should have:

  1. visual details about what characters, places and objects look like;
  2. dialogue or thoughts; and,
  3. action to show how the characters move and what they do.

Students also worked on prewriting conferences today.

The next piece of writing, a fictionalized personal narrative, will be due on Friday, November 2.

Math: We practiced solving multiple step problems. Homework is to finish Journal P2-8.

Science: None today due to the science MEAP test.

Social Studies: We learned and wrote notes about the American Indians of the Southwest and Plateau regions.

Spelling: None today due to the math MEAP test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: None today due to the math MEAP test.

Writing: We watched a dramatic reading of My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother, by Patricia Polacco, to see how a personal narrative can be told like a fiction story. Students were asked to think of a personal narrative they could write that could be fictionalized to be more interesting.

The next piece of writing, a fictionalized personal narrative, will be due on Friday, November 2.

Math: None today due to the math MEAP test.

Science: We completed an experiment to test our voluntary and involuntary muscles. Homework is to finish this experiment if not done in class.

Social Studies: None today due to the math MEAP test.

Spelling: Students completed a spelling and skill test today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: None today due to an assembly about bullying.

The next piece of writing, a final personal narrative, will be due on Friday, November 2.

Math: We reviewed subtracting decimals today. Homework is to finish Journal P2-7.

Science: None today due to our scheduled math skills time.

Social Studies: We learned about the American Indians of the California Intermountain region. They used shells for decorations and made homes from redwood. Homework is to finish Journal p. 16, box 3.3 if not done in class.
