Class activities for Friday, October 5

Friday, October 5th, 2012

Spelling: We reviewed the there/their/they’re and theirs/there’s homophones. This will be the skill tested on Monday’s spelling test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on making inferences using clues.

Writing: Today was a work day in writing.

The next piece of writing, a personal narrative, will be due on Friday, October 12. Students should be revising at this time.

Math: None today due to STAR Friday.

Science: We completed an experiment to test how muscle movement can cause fatigue. Homework is to finish the “Those Aching Muscles” experiment started in class.

Social Studies: We learned about the American Indians of the Northwest Coast. They used cedar wood to make fish traps, waterproof clothing and cedar homes. Homework is to finish Journal p. 16, box 3.2.

Spelling: We reviewed easily confused words:

  • probably/possibly
  • set/sit
  • among/between
  • than/then

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: None today due to art.

Writing: We reviewed strong verbs today. Rather than writing that a character was going somewhere, write that they were streaking, pelting, or ripping! Specific action is more interesting.

The next piece of writing, a personal narrative, will be due on Friday, October 12. Students should be revising at this point.

Math: We practiced decimal addition today. Homework is to finish Journal P2-6 started in class.

Science: We reviewed the skeletal system and made biology minibooks to write notes in.

Social Studies: We continued to learn about how different American Indian groups made different kinds of clothes, shelter and tools using the natural resources they could find in their environment.

Spelling: We learned that understanding Latin root words can help understand English words. The Latin word vocare means “to call.” This root shows up in the words vocation, provoke, advocate and voice, all words that are involved with speaking.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading and discussion day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on questioning, determining importance and visualizing as reading strategies.

Writing: Students worked on revising conferences today.

The next piece of writing, a personal narrative, will be due on Friday, October 12. Students should be revising at this point.

Math: We practiced solving word problems by drawing pictures and writing equations. Homework is to finish Journal P2-5 started in class.

Science: None today due to an extra time with reading.

Social Studies: We started to learn about how different American Indian groups made different kinds of clothes, shelter and tools using the natural resources they could find in their environment. Homework is to finish Notebook p. 15.

Spelling: We continued to review common spelling patterns for the /oi/ sound: oi and oy.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: None today due to an extra time with science.

Writing: We reviewed using precise nouns. It’s important for a writer to use the correct words that match up with what the writer is trying to say. If the writer is talking about a rusty car jack, say that, not a thing to push up a car covered in brown stuff.

The next piece of writing, a personal narrative, will be due on Friday, October 12. Students should be drafting at this point.

Math: We practiced adding and subtracting decimals today. Homework is to finish Journal P2-4 started in class.

Science: Students assembled model human skeletons today.

Social Studies: None today due to our math skills time.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

The next piece of writing, a personal narrative, will be due on Friday, October 12. Students should be drafting at this point.

Math: We reviewed estimating sums and differences by rounding. The sum of 537 + 695 can be estimated by rounding to 500 + 700, which is 1,200. Homework is to finish Journal P2-3 started in class.

Science: None today due to our math skills time.

Social Studies: Students completed a test about American Indian migration and adaptation.
