November 8th, 2012
Class activities for Thursday, November 8
Spelling: We reviewed the idea that suffixes are parts added onto a base word that change the meaning of the word.
Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.
Reading: Two groups presented Literature Circles projects to share their books with the class.
Writing: We talked about using the 2-3-1 format of organization in a story. This means that a writer should not give the most interesting part of the story at the beginning. Otherwise, the story will end with the least interesting information, and the reader will lost interest. It’s better to lead with the second most interesting part, and save the best part for last.
The next piece of writing, a fiction story, will be due on Monday, November 26. Students should be prewriting or drafting by now.
Math: Students practiced drawing a picture and writing equations to help solve problems. Homework is to finish Journal P3-9.
Science: We wrote notes about the nervous system and started to learn about the digestive system. Homework is to finish the Dealing with Digestion review page.
Social Studies: We learned about four important events in Europe that motivated explorers to come to the New World:
- Muslims were defeated in Spain and the Catholic Church grew;
- Spain sent Christopher Columbus to share the Catholic faith and look for riches;
- Protestant Churches formed when Martin Luther protested against the Catholic Church and started the Reformation;
- Protestant England defeated Catholic Spain and the Spanish Armada. England later sent explorers to maintain their power and wealth in the world.
