Class activities for Wednesday, November 7

Wednesday, November 7th, 2012

Spelling: None today due to completing math facts tests.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students continued to work on Literature Circles projects to share their books with the class.

Writing: We talked about using a recurring details in a story. This is a detail that is used more than once, often in the beginning and then later in the middle or end. This is a way to connect the parts of the story and give a special focus. It also helps the piece to feel more organized.

The next piece of writing, a fiction story, will be due on Monday, November 26.

Math: Students continued to practice multiplying using the standard method. Homework is to finish Journal P3-8.

Science: We learned about the nervous system. Homework is to finish review page 61 started in class.

Social Studies: We learned about how changes in Europe, wars, and religious beliefs were a motivation for exploring the New World.

Behavior Update:

  • Yellow magnets: 4
  • Orange magnets: 0
  • Red magnets: 0
  • STAR Awards: 0
  • Magnets moved this week (goal: 8): 5

Our Mission:
All students in Room 130 will do their best and get ready for 6th grade.

Missing Work Policy updated

Wednesday, November 7th, 2012

The missing work policy has been updated with an important change. The italicized parts below are new. View the full Grading Policy here.

Missing Work

Missing assignments have a significant impact on student grades. Please see the Homework Policy page to find out more about homework and missing assignments.

For the purposes of grading, missing assignments are assigned a value of 50%. This is to allow for a better assessment of what a student truly understands. Here’s an example:

  • Student A completes two assignments, one scored 100%, another is missing.
  • If the missing assignment is treated as 0%, the average of both assignments will be 50%.
  • If the missing assignment is treated as 50%, the average of both assignments will be 75%.
  • A grade of 75% seems to show partial learning, but the 50% seems to show that no learning has been shown.
  • Since the student has already demonstrated learning by earning 100% for one assignment, but hasn’t demonstrated learning for the missing assignment, the more accurate grade is a 75% C, rather than a 50% E.
The goal here is to make the final subject grade as accurate as possible, so that it will be possible to gauge how much learning a student has demonstrated, rather than how much work a student has completed.

Class activities for Friday, November 2

Friday, November 2nd, 2012

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays. This week’s assignment will be due on Monday.

Reading: Students continued to work on Literature Circles projects to share their books with the class.

Writing: Today was a publishing day in writing.

The next piece of writing, a fiction story, will be due on Monday, November 26.

Math: We continued to practice multiplying by using the distributive property to break larger numbers into pieces. Today, students used the grid method to multiply using the distributive property. Here’s an example of the grid method.

To multiply 34 × 13, break the problem into (30 + 4) x (10 + 3):

304
1030040
39012

Then, add the partial products: 300 + 90 + 40 + 12 = 442. Homework is to finish Journal P3-5 started in class.

Science: We wrote notes about the respiratory system. Homework is to finish the Breathtaking System page.

Social Studies: We started a unit on European explorers. Today we thought about all the tools involved in planning and taking a trip, and how hard it would have been for the explorers to travel without a lot of the tools we have today.

Behavior Update:

  • Yellow magnets: 4
  • Orange magnets: 0
  • Red magnets: 0
  • STAR Awards: 0
  • Magnets moved this week (goal: 8): 7
