Class activities for Thursday, September 12
Spelling: Today we reviewed short and long vowel sounds.
You can find our yearly 500 word list here. Words will be selected from this list for each test. Students will not know which words will be tested. Find out more on our spelling page.
Cursive: We’ll start cursive soon.
Reading: We started to think of problems caused when people aren’t careful with books. This is in preparation to open our class library for check out.
Writing: Everyone made a map of “buried stories.” Just like pirates might dig for treasure based on the directions of a map, each student made a map of a favorite location and put an X in a place where an interesting story happened. This will help students thing of creative writing ideas. Our first writing piece, a personal narrative, is due Friday, September 20. The personal narrative should be written about a memory or true event in each student’s life.
Math: Each student created and explored their online math account. This will allow students to access the text, journal and other math resources from any internet-connected computer. Have your student go to shortlinks.mrhowd.com/math and show you. We attempted to complete more, but poor behavior choices hindered our progress.
Science: We started a unit on magnetism today. Each student created a minibook to collect important ideas, and they brainstormed what they think about magnets.
Social Studies: We started to learn about economics today. We learned that people always have unlimited wants, but the world only had limited resources. Balancing the two is what economists do.
