Class activities for Wednesday, April 20

Spelling: We talked about the idea that some sounds are spelling in more than one way. For example, the words read and red have the same sounds, but different spelling patterns.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students worked on creating slides for their presentation today. We learned about using bullets to organize text, and how to inset and organize images. The I-Search project is due on April 29. Students will share their research as a digital presentation during our I-Search Conference on April 29.

Homework is to work on research, the mind map, or slides for at least 15 minutes.

Math: We practiced dividing with remainders today using Khan Academy. Our target is to finish division skills by the end of April.

Science: Students worked on a district test about the sun, moon, and earth.

Social Studies: None today due to our reading skills and AR practice time.

Spelling: Students continued making Words to Learn lists by correcting words missed on the last spelling test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on making connections and asking curious questions from the text.

Writing: Students continued to organize their information into a Mind Map today using the MindMup Google Drive app. They also created a Google Slides document and started working on some initial slides. The I-Search project is due on April 29. Students will share their research as a digital presentation during our I-Search Conference on April 29.

Homework is to work on research, the mind map, or slides for at least 15 minutes.

Math: We continued to work on 1-digit division with no remainders today using Khan Academy. Our target is to finish division skills by the end of April.

Science: Finished watching a documentary about ways that the earth is suited for life and scientific discovery. We’ll have a MiniQuiz soon about the sun, moon, and earth.

Social Studies: We talked about checks and balances today and learned it means that each branch can check the power of the other branches to make sure that one branch doesn’t get too powerful. Homework is to finish the Power Problems note page from class.

Spelling: Students started making Words to Learn lists by correcting words missed on the last spelling test.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students started organized their information into a Mind Map today using the MindMup Google Drive app. They will use their mind maps to plan their slide presentation and will start working on that as soon as tomorrow. The I-Search project is due on April 29. Students will share their research as a digital presentation during our I-Search Conference on April 29.

Homework is to finish the mind map started in class.

Math: We’ve been working on standard division lately using Khan Academy. Today we practiced 1-digit division with no remainders. Our target is to finish division skills by the end of April.

Science: None today. We’ll have a MiniQuiz tomorrow about the sun, moon, and earth.

Social Studies: We reviewed the powers of each branch and learned that each branch has special powers and limits on those powers. Students completed a MiniQuiz today about how the government is organized into branches and levels.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays. This week’s will be due on Monday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on making connections and solving unknown words through chunking and context clues.

Writing: Students continued to work on finding information for their I-Search informational research project using books and websites. The project is due on April 29. Students will share their research as a digital presentation during our I-Search Conference on April 29.

Math: We’ve been working on standard division lately using Khan Academy.

Here are some skills we’ve been working on:

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: We learned that the earth has around 20 features that make it habitable for life: oxygen atmosphere, right location from sun, correct size star, rocky planet, liquid water, magnetic field, and many others. All these features are needed for life and show that earth-like planets are rare in the universe.

Social Studies: None today.
