Class activities for Friday, May 27

Friday, May 27th, 2016

Spelling: We practiced working with the idea that some words have silent letters. We also noticed that the silent letters can affect the vowel sound, such as changing the sound from short to long in these examples:

  • pin/pine
  • rod/rode
  • hug/huge

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading skills and AR practice day.

Writing: Students worked on writing making and proving their decision for their Find It, Decide It compare and contrast project. The Find It, Decide It project is due Friday, June 3. Homework is to finish the draft of the project with these sections:

  1. Short introduction
  2. Comparision section with at least five ways of similarity
  3. Contrast section with at least five ways of difference
  4. Decision with at least five reasons

Math: Students completed a STAR Math test today.

Science: We learned about more animals with unique adaptations: different bird beaks, ducks that follow their mother

Social Studies: None today.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading skills day due to art.

Writing: Students worked on researching differences for their Find It, Decide It compare and contrast project. The Find It, Decide It project is due Friday, June 3. Homework is to finish the differences/contrast section of the project.

Math: We practiced converting between common fractions and decimals. Homework is to level up on this skill worked on in class in Khan Academy.

Science: We learned about more animals with unique adaptations: water-holding frog, woodpecker, bombardier beetle.

Social Studies: We worked on geography skills using MobyMax Social Studies today.

Spelling: Students finished making Words to Learn lists from words missed on the last spelling test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students started making comparisons for their Find It, Decide It compare and contract project. The Find It, Decide It project is due Friday, June 3. Homework is to finish an introduction and the comparison section of the project.

Math: We practiced writing decimals from fractions and vice versa, and also practiced writing decimals for fractions larger than 1. Homework is to level up on these skills worked on in class in Khan Academy.

Science: We learned about how reptiles and plants are adapted to desert environments.

Social Studies: We worked on geography skills using MobyMax Social Studies today. Many students were continuing to learn about climate or human geography today.

Spelling: Students made Words to Learn lists from words missed on the last spelling test. Homework is to finish the Words to Learn list if not done in class.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: We had art today, so students worked on reading skills or AR tests.

Writing: Students started collecting and organizing information for their Find It, Decide It compare and contract project. We also talked about organizing sources using footnotes. The Find It, Decide It project is due Friday, June 3. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes.

Math: We practiced writing decimals from fractions, and writing fractions and decimals from pictures or number lines. Homework is to level up on these skills work on in class in Khan Academy.

Science: We learned about how camels are adapted to desert environments.

Social Studies: We worked on geography skills using MobyMax Social Studies today. Many students were continuing to learn about climate or human geography today.

Class activities for Monday, May 23

Monday, May 23rd, 2016

Spelling: Today was a preview of upcoming spelling words.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on summarizing and determining importance as reading strategies.

Writing: We started our final project of the year, a compare and contrast research project called Find It, Decide It. Students will be working with a partner to research a decision, compare and contrast two choices, and to make a decision based on research. Students should try to select their final topic idea tonight. The Find It, Decide It project is due Friday, June 3.

Math: We practiced writing decimals from words, pictures, and number lines using Khan Academy today. Homework is to level up on the first four decimal skills in Khan Academy.

Science: We continued to learn about how adaptations help animals survive. Today, we learned about what special traits polar bears have that help them survive in the arctic.

Social Studies: We worked on geography skills using MobyMax Social Studies today. Many students were continuing to learn about natural resources or human geography today.
