Class activities for Monday, January 9

Monday, January 9th, 2017

Spelling: We reviewed use of the their/they’re/there/theirs/there’s homophones. This will be the skill tested on tomorrow’s spelling test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays. 

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on visualizing and determining importance as reading strategies.

Writing: We talked about how students should be able to type at least 100 words each day at school and at home. For this project, that amounts to an entire scene of talking, action, and visual details. If a student types at least this much at school and home each day, they shouldn’t have a problem finishing writing projects.

Students continued to draft their adventure stories. Our current writing project is a Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook. Students will write a fiction adventure story with choices that the reader can make. Each choice can change how the story turns out. Students will publish their adventure as a website at Google Sites. See below for more details.

Math: We practiced decimal multiplication again today. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Here are some Khan Academy topics we are working on right now for a one more school day:

Science: We read about the circulatory system. Homework is to finish the Efficient System note page started in class.

Social Studies: We about how the geography of the English colonies determined why types of jobs settlers had and where the settlements were built.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays. 

Reading: Today was a reading skills and AR practice day.

Writing: Students created websites in Google Sites and drafted the first page of their adventure story. Our current writing project is a Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook. Students will write a fiction adventure story with choices that the reader can make. Each choice can change how the story turns out. Students will publish their adventure as a website at Google Sites. See below for more details.

Here are some Khan Academy topics we are working on right now for a couple more days:

Science: We read about the muscular system, wrote notes in our notebooks, and started to learn about the circulatory system.

Social Studies: We learned about the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Reyes, Day of the Kings, which is today. The class had gifts left in their shoes by the “Three Kings” and we played a game. The winners of the game were selected to plan a party for our class on February 2.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students drafted the first page of their adventure story, introducing the main character.  Our current writing project is a Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook. Students will write a fiction adventure story with choices that the reader can make. Each choice can change how the story turns out. Spelling: We learned that some English words have foreign language roots. For example, the Latin word vocare means to call. It can be seen in the English words vocal, voice, provoke, vocation. Understanding that the voc- root has something to do with calling or talking helps readers understand unfamiliar English words with the same root.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays. 

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on questioning and inferring as reading strategies.

Writing: Students created a mindmap to help prewrite the plot and choices of their next writing project, a Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook. Students will write a fiction adventure story with choices that the reader can make. Each choice can change how the story turns out. Students will publish their adventure as a website at Google Sites. See below for more details.

Science: We completed two experiments about the muscular system. One was about what happens when muscles are overused. Another experiment was about voluntary and involuntary muscles. Homework is to finish the experiment notes started in class.

Social Studies: We started a new topic today about life in the English colonies and learned a little about the life of Ben Franklin.
