Class activities for Tuesday, January 24

Tuesday, January 24th, 2017

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays. 

Reading: Today we learned more about our future class play, The Legend of Lightning Larry. We read the text and watched a performance. We’ll practice and perform this play in March. More details will be available soon.

Writing: We started working on our next writing project, a literary essay (here’s a sample). Students will select a picture book and write an essay about the theme or big idea of the book.

A literary essay will be due Friday, February 10.

Math: We practiced rounding to estimate decimal division. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Science: We completed an experiment about the digestive system. Homework is to finish the experiment and a digestive system notes page.

Social Studies: Students worked on digital assessments about the colonial regions of the US.

Spelling: Students worked on making Words to Learn lists from words they missed on the last spelling test. This is your student’s spelling list to practice for the next test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays. This week’s assignment is eight sentences.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students worked on editing their adventure stories today. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes. Your student should be editing for capitals, spelling, run on sentences, paragraphs, and other conventions.

Math: We reviewed dividing decimals by 10s, 100s, and 1000s. The strategy is to move the decimal to the left, one place when dividing by 10, and three places when dividing by 1000. Students also worked on math skills using MobyMax Math today. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Here are some Khan Academy topics to have complete by now:

Science: We read about the respiratory system and wrote notes in our science notebooks.

Social Studies: We finished learning about the Middle and Souther colonial regions. Students will complete digital assessments about these topics tomorrow.

Notes:

  • The second marking period ends tomorrow. Any missing paper assignments or corrections are due tomorrow. Digital assignments can be completed over the weekend.
  • Have you set a Daily Homework Time for your student? Consider 15 minutes of math, 15 minutes of writing, and 20 minutes of something else to make a brain smarter!

Spelling: Today was a preview of upcoming spelling words.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays. This week’s assignment is eight sentences.

Reading: None today due to art.

Writing: Students worked on revising conferences and revising their adventure stories today. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes. Your student should be finished with their draft of at least 10 webpages at least three different endings.

Math: Students completed a STAR Math test today. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Here are some Khan Academy topics to have complete by now:

Science: We completed an experiment about how exercise changes pulse and breathing rate. Homework is to finish the Heart Beats and Breathing experiment started in class.

Social Studies: We learned about how the Middle Colonies were founded on commerce and taken over from the Dutch by the English.

Spelling: Today was the class spelling bee. Congratulations to Skylar and Matilda for winning our class spelling bee and moving on to the school competition.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays. 

Reading: Today was an AR and reading skills practice day.

Writing: Students continued to draft their adventure stories. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes. Your student should be drafting at this point and finished with their draft by Monday. We’ve talked in class about writing at least 10 webpages and having at least three different endings.

Math: None today due to extra time with social studies. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Social Studies: We learned about the New England colonial region and how it was very strict with not much religious freedom.

Spelling: Students completed a spelling and skill test today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays. 

Reading: Students worked on a STAR Reading test today.

Writing: Students continued to draft their adventure stories. The goal is to write a new webpage each time students write; there are six more writing sessions including home time and weekends. Ten pages/scenes would be a good minimum to plan for.
