Class activities for Wednesday, October 24

Wednesday, October 24th, 2018

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.

Reading: We learned some new strategies today:

  • Reread when things are confusing.
  • When an article talks about problems, it will usually follow that with talking about solutions.
  • Context clues can help solve unknown words. The clue is usually right after the word, after a comma or the word or.

Writing: We talked more about speaker tags and action beats. Here are some options:

  • “I see dead people,” I said.
  • “I see dead people,” I said as I was walking through the cemetery.
  • “I see dead people,” I said, walking through the cemetery.
  • “I see dead people.” I walked slowly through the cemetery, my eyes darting everywhere.

Students also worked on revising today. A personal narrative is due Sunday, November 4. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be finished with their draft by now and starting to make changes.

Math: We practiced estimating addition by rounding. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We tested what plants need for food by using a simulation. We noticed that plants need light, water, and carbon dioxide to make new matter. Plants also need nutrients to be fully healthy, but they can make food matter without nutrients.

Social Studies: None today.

Character Strength: We are learning about perspective this week.

Class activities for Tuesday, October 23

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2018

Spelling: Students worked on Words to Learn lists by correcting their missed spelling words.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.

Reading: We read an article today about how and why America became its own country.

Writing: We talked today about how to use an action beat. That’s like a speaker tag, but gives an action detail rather than tells who said something. Like this:

“Who did this?” My mom stared at the streams of toilet paper hanging from the trees in our front yard.

The bold sentence is an action beat that shows what the character was doing as they spoke. Action beats are a way to add style to a story.

Students also worked on drafting today. Today was the last class drafting day. A personal narrative is due Sunday, November 4. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be finished with their draft tonight.

Math: We started our next topic. Today’s skill was learning common fractions and decimals. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: None today due to extra time with the social studies test.

Social Studies: Today was a test about American Indians, how they survived, how they adapted, and what their cultures were like.

Character Strength: We are learning about perspective this week.
