Class activities for Tuesday, October 16

Tuesday, October 16th, 2018

Spelling: None today due to extra writing.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.

Reading: We read a Time for Kids article the future of transportation. We also practiced rereading, especially rereading the first and last paragraphs to look for main ideas.

Writing: We watched a video about a person who tried to bake cookies, but didn’t take time to gather the correct ingredients. That’s a little like how writing works. If a writer takes time to make a list of ideas during prewriting, then it will be easier to follow that “recipe” and end up with a finished piece of writing. If a person doesn’t plan their writing, they won’t have the right ingredients and their writing will turn out half-baked.

Students also worked on prewriting, and there should have been enough time to prewrite the beginning, middle, and ending. A personal narrative is due Sunday, November 4. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: We practiced moving the decimal in a number when multiplying or dividing by 10. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy. Our class topic mastery is now up to 68%, with a goal of reaching 100% by October 20. We are getting closer! Check Jupiter to see your student’s mastery level.

Science: Students reviewed evidence and used it to write a scientific argument about why sloths and jaguars in our study forest weren’t growing and thriving. Homework is to finish notebook p. 28 if not done in class.

Social Studies: We read more about American Indian cultures today, include the roles of men, women, and children, and what their governments were like.

Character Strength: We are learning about integrity this week.

Our Mission:
All students in Room 130 will do their best and get ready for 6th grade.

Class activities for Monday, October 15

Monday, October 15th, 2018

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.

Reading: We read a Time for Kids article about the pros and cons of technology use.

Writing: We talked about writing grades and effort. There is a new grade in Jupiter called Total Revisions. It’s a numerical score that shows how many total changes your student made when working on their writing. For the second piece of writing, the top student made over 14,000 total edits, and the bottom student made less than 2,000. That shows that some students are working very hard some and some are being pretty lackadaisical. Check JupiterGrades to see how your student did and if their grade is below average, check to see if they are working on writing every weeknight for 15 minutes.

Today was also our first prewriting day for our third piece of writing. This will be our last personal narrative of the year, due Sunday, November 4.  Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: We worked on powers of 10 today. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We practiced making claims and proving them with evidence.

Social Studies: We read about American Indian cultures today.

Character Strength: We are learning about integrity this week.

Class activities for Friday, October 12

Friday, October 12th, 2018

Spelling: None on Fridays. We used this time to work on our digital Leadership Notebooks. We worked on listing our favorites and then created reading goals for the rest of October. Students that meet there goal will earn a BookIt certificate for a free personal pizza. Students received a paper calendar to track their daily progress.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Students wrote notes about their reading today.

Writing: Today was our last class publishing day for this piece of writing. We also talked about when to add a section break in a story (a section break is a skipped line between paragraphs). A section break is for large changes in time and place, so it shouldn’t be used after each paragraph. A personal narrative is due Sunday, October 14.  Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes and to finish publishing this piece of writing by Sunday.

Math: Students finished a STAR Math test today. Homework during the week is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We talked about how scientists could use a food web to study the health of organisms in an ecosystem. We also modeled a food web.

Social Studies: We worked on the Lesson 1.2 Key Ideas, Got It, and Quiz about how American Indians adapted to their environments. Homework is to finish this if not done in class.
