Spelling: Students worked on MobyMax Vocabulary today.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 10-12 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. Students shared their notes with other students and discussed their ideas.

Writing: Students continued to work on revising today. This is the time to add details (talking, action, visual details), take out parts that don’t fit or aren’t focused on the topic, finish unfinished thoughts, and improve the writing.

A personal narrative is due October 11. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be finished with a full-page draft and revising at this point.

Math: Students continued to work on place value skills today or move ahead to the next topic. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We used gravel, water, and plaster of Paris to make a model of sedimentary rock. We’ll see if our “rock layers” harden over night and cement into rock.

Social Studies: None today due to extra time with science.

Character Strength: We are learning about open-mindedness this week.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Students read a text quietly and wrote down questions, connections, illustrations, and important passages. They will discuss their thinking with others tomorrow.

Writing: We talked adding visual details to describe characters when they show up in a story. Here is a page from “The Prophet of Yonwood:”

In this part of the book, Brenda Beeson is just appearing in the story. After some brief talking, the author gives us several visual details so we can picture the character. In fact, it’s a whole paragraph of visual details!

Today was also a revising day. This is the time to add details, take out parts that don’t fit, finish unfinished thoughts, and improve the writing. Revising doesn’t mean to keep adding on and on to the end, but to go back and add details to the beginning, and middle of the story.

Math: We practiced comparing large numbers in word form today. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy. Our class median for the place value topic is up to 97%!

Science: We learned more about how sedimentary rock is formed by layers of sand, silt, or gravel forming in water, and then compacting and cementing over time. We wrote notes about this and will make a model of it tomorrow.

Social Studies: We read about a fictional goverment and we are going to write notes tomorrow about if it is a republic, is limited, is constitutional, and is a representative government. This will help us to learn what our government is like.

Reading: We an expository text about how slow and fast natural processes can change the earth.

Writing: We talked about using strong verbs so the reader can picture the action. Instead of saying “run,” say “streak, rip, pelt.”

Students continued working on drafting today. Your student should be finished with their draft tonight, including a beginning, middle, and ending. The draft should be about a full page.

Our class median for the place value topic is 93%, with a goal of finishing by October 3. Many students are ahead, but several are behind. Ask your student to show you their progress.

Science: Students finished notes from our last activity about examining a rock and using a simulation to study how rocks form.

Social Studies: We learned more about what a republic is like, how people can elect their leaders, how the power of a republic is limited.
