Online activities for Friday, March 20

Reading: Today’s assignment was to discuss their Literature Circles reading and notes from yesterday. We did that using a Zoom group video chat. Twenty-three students showed up! Students also practiced reading with MobyMax Reading Stories. Check the Online School Agenda for links. Reading is at 9:00 am daily.

Writing: Today’s assignment was to work on revising again. Our class average is up to 80%; some students should be able to finish up this weekend. For revising, students can add new talking, action, or visual details, change words into better ones, or take out parts that don’t fit. Check how your student is doing here. We work on writing at 1 pm daily.

The novel project is due Wednesday, March 25. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes daily during the week.

Math: We practiced classifying triangles and shapes today. Check the Online School Agenda for links to the skills we worked on and a tutorial video. We work on math at 11 am. Our class average is up to 69% in plane figures right now! We’ll be finishing this topic next week and moving on to measuring angles.

Science: We read a book about why people in different jobs visualize sound. After that, students completed a note page. The read along book is below:

Novel Writing Project 2020

The final piece of the 3rd Marking Period will be our final fiction project of the year. Students will write and publish their own novel! Each student will write their own novel, with a word goal minimum of 1,000-3,000 words, based on their reading level (each student’s minimum writing goal is equal to their reading level multiplied by 500). The novels will be written in Google Docs (docs.google.com) to make use of the word count feature. Final novels will be uploaded to Lulu.com and published as paperback books, which can be purchased for reasonable prices. So yes, students will actually write and publish their own novels. This project is based on the National Novel Writing Month Young Writers program.

Science: We revised our notes about wavelength and amplitude from yesterday, then completed an Amplitude Sorting tool as an assignment. Check the Online School Agenda for links. Homework is to Amplitude Sorting tool and submit to Jupiter if not done this morning. We work on science at 10 am.

Social Studies: We read a short story about positive and negative incentives and students looked for examples from the story. Homework is to complete the Incentives Scenario note page if not done this morning. Check the Online School Agenda for specifics. Social studies is at 10:30 daily.

Reading: Today’s assignment was to read some books in Epic. I sent students a book on sound to read. Then we used MobyMax Foundational Reading. Reading is at 9:00 am daily.

Writing: Today’s assignment was to continue drafting their novel today. Students should have 100% of their word goal completed by the end of today. Some students are still behind. But the class average is up to 72%, so the class is improving! And six students have surpassed their word count goal! One student has typed over 3,700 words, and our class has typed over 47,000 words in total! Check how your student is doing here. We work on writing at 1 pm daily.

The novel project is due Wednesday, March 25. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes daily during the week.

Novel Writing Project 2020

Science: We reviewed wavelength and amplitude again today with video, then a quiz. Check the Online School Agenda for what we did, videos students could watch, and the quiz to try again if anyone wants to! We work on science at 10 am.

Social Studies: We reviewed supply, demand, and price, then took a quiz. Check the Online School Agenda for specifics. Social studies is at 10:30 daily.

Science: We used a simulation and some videos to learn about wavelength. A short wavelength makes a high pitch, and a long wavelength makes a low pitch. Check the Online School Agenda for what we did, videos students could watch, and the notebook pages for students to complete. We work on science at 10 am.

Social Studies: We reviewed supply, demand, and price. Students could read along with me to a page of text about those ideas, and there was a note page to complete. Check the Online School Agenda for specifics. Social studies is at 10:30 daily.
