Class activities for Friday, March 13

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: None until we return to school.

Reading: Today’s assignment was to practice reading with MobyMax Reading Stories, TestPrep Reading Skills Literature, and TestPrep Reading Skills Informational.

Writing: Today’s assignment was to continue drafting their novel today. Students should have 70% of their word goal completed by the end of the weekend.

The novel project is due Wednesday, March 25. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes daily during the week.

Novel Writing Project 2020

The final piece of the 3rd Marking Period will be our final fiction project of the year. Students will write and publish their own novel! Each student will write their own novel, with a word goal minimum of 1,000-3,000 words, based on their reading level (each student’s minimum writing goal is equal to their reading level multiplied by 500). The novels will be written in Google Docs (docs.google.com) to make use of the word count feature. Final novels will be uploaded to Lulu.com and published as paperback books, which can be purchased for reasonable prices. So yes, students will actually write and publish their own novels. This project is based on the National Novel Writing Month Young Writers program.

Math: Students used Khan Academy to practice the partial quotients method again today. I shared an example video on the Online School Agenda to help students. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We reviewed amplitude using a discussion forum in Jupiter. Students that haven’t commented can find it in Jupiter Messages.

Social Studies: We reviewed economic ideas about supply, demand, price, and substitute goods using a Jupiter discussion forum.

Character Strength: We are learning about social intelligence this week.

Spelling: We learned about using hyphens when spelling numbers less than 100, and for fractions.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. Students also practice reading skills using MobyMax Foundational Reading.

Writing: Students continued to draft their novel today. Students should have 60% of their word goal completed by tonight. The class average is 51%, which means that several students are behind schedule.

The novel project is due Wednesday, March 25. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes daily during the week.

Novel Writing Project 2020

The final piece of the 3rd Marking Period will be our final fiction project of the year. Students will write and publish their own novel! Each student will write their own novel, with a word goal minimum of 1,000-3,000 words, based on their reading level (each student’s minimum writing goal is equal to their reading level multiplied by 500). Math: We practiced dividing using the partial quotients method again today. We haven’t made much class progress on division lately due to some students not working at home. Please make sure your student is practicing math on weekdays, so they aren’t getting behind or feeling confused in class. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Today was a health and nutrition lesson.

Social Studies: We annotated an article about how video game manufacturers compete for business.

Character Strength: We are learning about social intelligence this week.

Spelling: We finished reviewing rules for adding suffixes onto base words.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: None today due to the late start.

Writing: Students also continued to draft their novel today. Students should have 50% of their word goal completed by tonight. The class average is 41%. Several students are behind, but many have made good progress by working at home.

The novel project is due Wednesday, March 25. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes daily during the week.

Spelling: We reviewed rules for adding suffixes onto base words.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We talked about how to punctuate dialogue today, using quotation marks, commas, and periods.

Students also continued to draft their novel today. Students should have 40% of their word goal completed by tonight. The class average is 28%, meaning that several students are still behind about a day’s worth of work.

The novel project is due Wednesday, March 25. Homework is work on writing for at least 15 minutes daily during the week.

Spelling: We started to review prefixes and suffixes today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: We read some fantasy stories about people running for public office!

Writing: We reviewed the idea about writing balanced scenes that contain some talking, action, and visual details. Each scene should have some of all three details.

Students also continued to draft their novel today. Students should have 30% of their word goal completed by tonight. The class average is 18%, meaning that several students are getting behind, mainly due to not working enough at school and home.

The novel project is due Wednesday, March 25. Homework is work on writing for at least 15 minutes daily during the week.

Science: We reviewed evidence for how sound energy travels as waves through particle collisions, and then students wrote an explanation about that. Homework is to finish p. 43 if not done in class.

Social Studies: We simulated circular flow–the economics idea that money keeps flowing from people to businesses to people through the economy.
