Class activities for Tuesday, November 17

Tuesday, November 17th, 2015

Spelling: We learned about common spelling patterns for the long /i/ sound.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 25-27 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: Today was a final practice day for Literature Circles Reader’s Theatre projects, and one group performed their play. The remaining groups will perform tomorrow.

Writing: We talked about breaking a text into paragraphs. Students also continued to draft today. Your student should be nearing the end of their draft if the want to have time to revise and edit. A fiction story will be due Monday, November 30.

Math: We practiced comparing numbers using place value. Students also used MobyMax Math to practice math skills; many students are practicing place value or rounding skills.

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: We wrote notes in our minibooks about electricity, and students completed a MiniQuiz about circuits.

Social Studies: We reviewed the class article worked on yesterday and wrote notes in our minibooks. We’ll have a MiniQuiz about supply, demand, competition, and price tomorrow.

Class activities for Monday, November 16

Monday, November 16th, 2015

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 25-27 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: None today due to getting new seats, jobs, and team captains.

Writing: Students shared with the class the problem of their fiction story, and how the problem will be solved.

Students also continued to draft today. Your student should be more than half finished with their draft at this point. A fiction story will be due Monday, November 30.

Math: We practiced understanding the value of a digit in a number. For example, in the number 4,356, the 4 is worth 4,000, the 3 is worth 300, and the 5 is worth 50. Students also practiced place value skills at Khan Academy.

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: We reviewed our last experiment about different ways to configure a circuit. We’ll have a miniquiz about this soon.

Social Studies: Students worked in teams to comment on an article about supply, demand and price. View the article and our comments here. We’ll also have a miniquiz about this topic this week.

Class activities for Friday, November 13

Friday, November 13th, 2015

Spelling: None today due to the half day schedule.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 22-24 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: Today was the AR Dodgeball reward game. Congratulations to Jacob and Ariana, the only students from our class that made their AR goal and could attend the game. The rest of the class planned some reading goals to help each student become a better and better reader.

Writing: We read a story, Fox, by Margaret Wild, that showed strong verbs, visual details, and an interesting ending. Students also worked on prewriting conferences today.

According to the schedule, today is the second of four drafting days. Hopefully students have used the half days this week to get started on their story. Your student should be finished prewriting and starting their draft. A fiction story will be due Monday, November 30.

Math: None today due to the half day schedule.

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: None today due to the half day schedule.

Social Studies: We started to read an article about how the supply and demand of video game consoles during Christmas shopping season affects price.

Class activities for Thursday, November 12

Spelling: None today due to the half day schedule.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 22-24 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: Students worked on reader’s theatre plays to share their book with the class.

Writing: We talked about adding visual details to describe what a character looks like. A writer should describe a character when they show up in a story so that the reader can see a mental picture in their mind.

Homework is to finish prewriting (characters, settings, and plot), and to start the draft. A fiction story will be due Monday, November 30.

Math: None today due to the half day schedule.

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: Students worked on a experiment to test if which arrangements of circuits would light a bulb. Homework is to finish the Repair Manual page if not done in class.

Social Studies: None today due to our reading skills and AR practice time.

Spelling: Today was a preview of upcoming spelling words.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 22-24 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: None today due to the half day schedule.

Writing: None today due to the half day schedule.

Students should be prewriting, focusing on the characters and settings of their story as well as starting to plan the plot. A fiction story will be due Monday, November 30.

Math: We practiced reading and writing numbers in these forms:

  • standard: 1,532
  • word: one thousand, five hundred, thirty-two
  • expanded: 1000 + 500 + 30 + 2

Students also practiced these skills in Khan Academy.

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: None today due to the half day schedule.

Social Studies: None today due to the half day schedule.
