Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on visualizing and asking questions as reading strategies.

Writing: We reviewed the qualities of a literary essay (here’s a sample):

1. Introduction with a summary of the book and what the theme of the book is.
2. Three paragraphs with examples to prove the theme of the book.
3. A conclusion stating the theme and what the student learned.

We also started writing an example essay together.

A literary essay will be due Friday, February 12.

Math: We continued to practice multiplying using the standard method. Here are some skills we’ve been working on lately:

• Multiply a 1-digit number by a multiple of 10, 100, and 1000
• Multiplying tens
• Multiplication without regrouping
• Multiplication with carrying

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: Students completed an experiment about using spring scales to measure weight. Homework is to finish the Using Spring Scales experiment if not done in class.

Social Studies: None today due to our extra science time.

This project is due Tuesday, January 26. Students should revising and editing at this point; we’ve talked in class about writing at least seven pages. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes.

Science: We demonstrated today that adding heat to solid ice changes the state to a liquid, and adding heat to a liquid changes the state to a gas. We also wrote notes in our minibooks about these ideas.

Social Studies: We finished reading a story about how ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada, was caused by the boom and bust of gold mines. We saw that economies can change from a change in competition, natural resources, or technology.
