Class activities for Friday, October 11

Spelling: None today due to time spent working on our Leadership Notebooks. Today, students worked on a page with their favorites as a way to teach others about themselves.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 13-15 are available and were due today.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We talked about using precise nouns so that the reader understands what you mean. Don’t say “car booklet,” say “instruction manual.” Say “rust,” not “brown stuff.”

Students also worked on publishing today.

A personal narrative is due Sunday, October 13. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should a full page personal narrative finished by Sunday morning.

Math: We practiced rounding again today. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We read about how geologists use clues from rocks and fossils to infer that environments in the past were different than the present. A preset-day desert could have been a rain forest, ocean, or swamp in the past.

Social Studies: We had a leader lesson today about stopping and thinking. Proactive students stop and think at a difficult situation so they know how to make a choice that doesn’t cause problems.

Spelling: None today due to extra time with science.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 13-15 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Students read about the origins of the Ferris Wheel and wrote notes about their reading.

Writing: We talked about using the right word in the right spot, and to be specific. That makes writing sound more interesting and realistic.

Students also worked on editing or publishing today.

A personal narrative is due Sunday, October 13. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be editing or ready to publish by now.

Math: We started our new topic about addition, subtraction, and estimation. Today we practiced rounding.

Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We practiced writing a scientific argument that includes a claim, evidence, and why the evidence matters.

Social Studies: We learned about how different levels of government have different powers.

Writing: Students worked on editing conferences today by commenting to a partner about capitals, periods, sentence sense, spelling.

Math: Students finished their STAR Math test today.

Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Class activities for Tuesday, October 8

Spelling: We practiced common spelling patterns for the short /o/ sound: o, ou, aw, al.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 13-15 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: We finished reading a narrative nonfiction story and learned about some reading strategies: rereading and looking for context clues.

Writing: We talked about editing for the most common mistakes in writing: capitals, periods, sentence sense, spelling. Students also used Grammarly, an extension added to their chromebook Google account that helps with spell checking and editing.

Math: Students worked on a STAR Math test today. We were focusing on writing our math down for each problem and taking our time. As shown below, students that take their time get better results.

Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We used a computer to model how a fossil is created by sediment layers in water that cement to form rock. We also collected evidence that we will use to prove the claim that a desert study area was underwater in the past. Homework is to finish notebook p. 18 if not done in class.

Social Studies: We started our next topic about powers of the federal government. Today, we reviewed levels of government, local, state, and federal.

Reading: We started a new topic in reading today about learning from science. Today we read some narrative nonfiction stories about motion and gravity.

Writing: Students worked on revising conferences today by adding thought comments and questions to a partner’s writing.

Math: Students took a final unit test today for the place value topic. Our class mastery percentage ended at 97%! Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: None today due to extra time with writing.

Social Studies: Today was a leader lesson about “Choosing your weather.” This means that a student can choose their actions, attitude, and mood. A proactive person chooses to solve their problems, but a reactive person complains and blames others. They wait to be rescued instead of overcoming the challenge. Students need to know that it won’t work to avoid the problem or ignore it. It’s best to solve the problem while it’s still small.
