Spelling: Today we worked with suffixes and learned that the silent e at the end of a word is dropped when adding suffixes that begin with vowels (no two vowels next to each other). A spelling test is coming up next week. Visit the spelling page to download a copy of the unit 6 spelling worksheets.

Cursive: No new cursive assignment this week.

Reading: We finished up our Children’s Garden fluency project today.

Writing: Today we wrote letters to injured soldiers as part of a Student Council project.

Orders for the class book, Monster Mania, are due next Monday, January 29.

Math: Today students practiced measuring objects to the nearest centimeter and converting measurements into meters, centimeters and millimeters. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 98-99.

Science: Today we looked at electricity, electrical safety, and weather posters we created when we started the unit, to see how much we learned. We also did a demonstration experiment to remember that aluminum, like all metals, is a conductor. We also saw that impure water is a conductor.

Social Studies: We reviewed the Paleo-Indians, Old Copper People and Mound Builders, and then started a project to learn the Three Fires Indians. We will learn these concepts using the Jigsaw strategy in which students will join expert groups to learn about a topic, create a lesson, and then go back to their team to teach the lesson. Homework is to read and take notes for each student’s assigned topic.
