Class activities for Friday, April 11

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of at least seven words each are due Friday; this week’s assignment will be due on Monday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students continued to work on their I-Search projects (click here for more details) by collecting research on their I-Search 2008 class wiki pages, planning their presentations using webs created with Bubbl.us, and searching UnitedStreaming for related video clips and images. I also demonstrated how to use MrHowd.com Google Docs (docs.mrhowd.com) to create a presentation that can be edited from school and home.

A summary of the project:

Students will research their I-Search question using print and internet sources and create a digital presentation using PowerPoint or MrHowd.com Google Docs presentation software. Students are collecting their research on our I-Search 2008 class wiki. Later, students will present their findings to other students who sign up to attend their talk. The presentation slides will be turned in to portfolios for a writing grade.

The I-Search presentation is due April 25.

Math: None today. We’ll have a test on Monday over estimating, rounding and multiplication.

Science: We listened to Peter and the Wolf to see how the pitch of instruments was used to tell information in the story.

Social Studies: None on Fridays.

Spelling: Today students created their Words to Learn lists from the words they missed on the last spelling test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of at least seven words each are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students continued to work on their I-Search projects (click here for more details) by collecting research on their I-Search 2008 class wiki pages, planning their presentations using webs created with Bubbl.us, and searching UnitedStreaming for related video clips and images. Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students continued to work on their I-Search projects (click here for more details) by collecting research on their I-Search 2008 class wiki pages and planning their presentations using webs created with Bubbl.us. They also searched UnitedStreaming for related video clips and images.

Science: Students completed two experiments to see how pitch and tension are related. They noticed that tighter objects create high pitches. We also took notes in our minibooks. Homework is to finish the Good Vibrations response sheet.

Social Studies: We finished learning about the French and Indian War. Homework is to complete the SQ3R organizer started in class.

Spelling: Today we reviewed how the letter r changes the vowel sound (e.g., hose and horse). We also learned that or and ore are famous spelling patterns for the /or/ sound.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of at least seven words each are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on determining importance and questioning.

Writing: Students continued to work on their I-Search projects (click here for more details) by collecting research on their I-Search 2008 class wiki pages. Students also created Bubbl.us accounts to create online mind maps and webs. Students will plan their presentations in a web using Bubbl.us.

Science: We took notes in our minibooks and learned that fast vibrations make high pitches, and slow vibrations make low pitches.

Social Studies: We started learning about the French and Indian War, using an SQ3R organizer.

Reading: Today we started a nonfiction cycle in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students continued to work on their I-Search projects (click here for more details) by collecting research on their I-Search 2008 class wiki pages.

Students will research their I-Search question using print and internet sources and create a digital presentation using PowerPoint or MrHowd.com Google Docs presentation software. Students are collecting their research on our I-Search 2008 class wiki. Later, students will present their findings to other students who sign up to attend their talk. Math: Students completed a multiplication MiniQuiz today. I also introduced them to the “standard method” of multiplication, which is the method most adults are familiar with. Homework is to complete puzzle page 25, using the standard method for the first row, and any method for the final rows.

Science: We reviewed the pitch experiments from the last school week and learned that shorter objects create higher pitch sounds, and longer objects create lower pitch sounds.

Social Studies: We finished learning about the fur trade and the founding of Fort Pontchartrain in Detroit by Cadillac. Homework is to finish up the notes section of the Etch-a-Sketch organizer started in the last school week.
