Class activities for Wednesday, October 15

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Spelling: Students were asked to make their Words to Learn list today. This is a list of words they missed on the last spelling test, and words they can study for the next time. This is their customized spelling list to practice. Some students are not finished with correcting the words, highlighting the words in their writer’s folder, or writing sentences for the homophones, and can finish at lunch.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 27-29 are due Friday.

Reading: Today was the first reading day of the new Literature Circles cycle. Some groups worked on visualizing and inferring as reading strategies.

Students also received their STAR reading level from our October STAR test. The class average reading level grew from 4.40 to 4.61, over two months of growth in one month!

Writing: Students started revising conferences today. They were also introduced to editing conferences and started those. Unfinished conferences can be completed at home.

Class activities for Tuesday, October 14

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Spelling: None today due to the Math MEAP test.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 27-29 are due Friday.

Reading: Students received their new Literature Circles books today:

  • Tooter Pepperday
  • Bridge to Terabithia
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
  • Keeper of the Doves
  • A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning
  • Tuck Everlasting

Writing: Students looked at the grade from their previously submitted piece of writing. We also talked about how a piece of writing is more interesting if the topic is written as a story, rather than a list of facts. For example, instead of writing “All About Basketball,” it would be more interesting to write a story about a time when someone played basketball.

The next piece of writing, a personal narrative, will be due October 17. Students have been informed that writing pieces less than two pages in length (if handwritten) will probably not have enough information to help the reader understand the piece clearly.

Math: We reviewed place value today. Homework is to complete Journal pp. 32-33.

Science: None today due to the Math MEAP test.

Social Studies: None today due to the Math MEAP test.

Class activities for Monday, October 13

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Spelling: Today was the Unit 2 spelling and skill test.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 27-29 are due Friday.

Reading: Students previewed new Literature Circles books today.

Writing: We talked about how to focus on just the best part of a story: Christmas break (two weeks) > New Year’s Eve (one day) > watching a movie (two hours) > the end of the movie and the ball dropping (20 minutes). By having a narrow focus, the point of the story becomes clear to the reader, and the writer can spend their time writing about just the best, most important parts. With a piece of writing due this Friday, homework is to make sure that there are at least four double-spaced pages for each student’s rough draft.

Math: We had absolutely no time for math today due to some pretty ridiculous choices by a large majority of the class, who chose to be lackadaisical and lethargic in thinking through our learning today. As a result, homework is to complete Journal pp. 29-30.

Science: Today was a science test over sound and energy.

Social Studies: We learned that the Northeast is famous for the Iroquois Indians, who had a cooperative government, and the American Revolution.

Behavior Update:
