Spelling: We completed a spelling and skill test today. Look for a Words to Learn list next week.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 45-47 are available and due Monday.

Reading: None today due to the half day schedule.

Writing: Today was an editing day for our class book: If I Were President… Students will be writing their final copies next week.

Each student will write and illustrate one page for our class book, and this page will also be submitted into portfolios on December 1.

Math: Students completed a MiniQuiz today over bar graphs, addition and subtraction.

Science: None today due to the half day schedule.

Social Studies: None today due to Student Council speeches and elections.

Spelling: We reviewed common /s/ spelling patterns: s, ss, sc, ci, ce, cy. These patterns will be the skill tested on tomorrow’s spelling test.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 45-47 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was the final reading day for this cycle of Literature Circles. Students will be working next on projects to share their books with the class. Ask you student how their book turned out and what they liked about it.

Writing: Today was a revising day for our class book: If I Were President… Each student will write and illustrate one page for our class book, and this page will also be submitted into portfolios on December 1.

Math: We practiced the trade-first method of subtraction today.

Science: None today due to the half day schedule.

Social Studies: None today due to the half day schedule.

Spelling: We learned that numbers up to 99 are hyphenated when written in words (twenty-four, thirty-two). Students practiced hyphenating numbers while reviewing math facts. We will have a spelling test on Friday. Students received a Take-Home Task today to help them review /s/ spelling patterns, which is the skill test for Friday. The Take-Home Task is for parents and students to work on together.

Spelling: We reviewed common rules for adding suffixes to base words, and filled out a mini-poster.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 45-47 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on visualizing as a reading strategy.

Writing: Today was the final drafting day for our class book: If I Were President… Each student will write and illustrate one page for our class book, and this page will also be submitted into portfolios on December 1.

Math: We continue to review the trade-first method of subtraction, and also practiced mental math subtraction using a method called counting up. Homework is to complete Journal pp. 48-49.

Science: None today due to extra time with social studies and spelling.

Social Studies: We created a class “government” to see how the government makes laws. Today, the class spoke with their senators and representatives, and then both the Senate and the House of Representatives voted for bills:

  • The No Tipping in Your Chair Bill; and,
  • The No Touching Mr. Howd’s Stuff Bill.

Next, we’ll see if the bills pass through the other house of the legislative branch, then they’re off to the governor to see if he will sign them.

Homework is to complete the State Government Jeopardy organizer.

Spelling: None today due to getting new seats.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 45-47 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on fix up strategies.

Writing: Today was a drafting day for our class book: If I Were President… Each student will write and illustrate one page for our class book, and this page will also be submitted into portfolios on December 1.

Math: We reviewed the trade-first method of subtraction. This is very similar to the method they already know, and just involves making all trades (or borrowing) first, then subtracting. Homework is to complete Journal p. 46.

Science: We reviewed the color filter experiment from last week.

Social Studies: We talked about the judicial branch of government. Homework is to complete a Branches of Government flip chart showing the name, definition and an illustration of each branch.
