October 3rd, 2013
Class activities for Thursday, October 3
Spelling: Today we learned about homophones and homographs:
- A homophone is a word that has the same sound as another word, but a different spelling or meaning. Example: made/maid.
- A homograph is a word that has the same spelling as another word, but a different sound or meaning. Example: wind (The wind blows.)/wind (Wind the clock).
Cursive: Cursive workbook pp. 18-23 are due on Friday.
Reading: We practiced visualizing as a reading strategy by drawing illustrations that matched text from a story.
Writing: Students created digital writing portfolios in their Google Docs and started to organize their writing.
Students also continued to draft their current story. The second piece of writing for the year is another personal narrative. This personal narrative is due Friday, October 11. Your student should be nearing the end of their draft at this time.
Math: We continued to review special quotients today.
Science: We finished reviewing our last science experiment about the force of magnet through different materials. We learned that a magnet’s force can attract through many different materials, as long as the materials are thin enough and not magnetic.
Social Studies: None today due to extra science time.
- Yellow magnets: 4
- Orange magnets: 0
- Red magnets: 0
- STAR Awards: 5
- Magnets moved this week (goal: TBD): 10
Check your student’s Personal and Social Growth grade online to see if your student moved their magnet.
