October 30th, 2013
Class activities for Wednesday, October 30
Spelling: We talked about how it is easier to spell larger words by breaking the words into syllables.
Reading:Â Students worked on MobyMax Reading today. We also started working on Literature Circles projects for students to share their books with the class.
Writing: We talked about using verbs that describe action in writing. Instead of saying run, write streak, pelt, zip. Those types of action verbs help the reader to picture what is happening.
Students also completed revising conferences today by posting comments to a partner’s writing piece in Google Docs.
The third and last piece of the marking period is a slightly fictionalized personal narrative, due Friday, November 1. Your student should be making final revisions at this time.
Math: We practiced extending tables to identify number patterns. Students also worked on completed math skills in MobyMax.
Science: Students completed an experiment that involved making a compass from a magnetized iron needle floating on water. Students noticed that the needle always pointed in a north-south direction, even if the bowl of water was moved, unless another magnet was near the compass. Homework is to finish the Detecting Directions experiment.
Social Studies: None today due to our reading skills practice time.
