Class activities for Friday, January 17

Friday, January 17th, 2014

Spelling: Students completed a spelling and skill test today.

Cursive: Cursive workbook pp. 60-62 were due today.

Reading: Today was reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on questioning and summarizing as reading strategies.

Writing: Students finished working on their Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook projects today. Homework is to finish their stories tonight or tomorrow morning, if not done already. Our next project will be a literary essay, and we’ll start that next week.

Math: We continued to work on the district mid-year math test today.

Science: None today.

Social Studies: We learned that the top three trading partners of the US are Canada, China, and Mexico. We also predicted what we export to and import from China. Homework is to finish the prediction chart if not done in class.

Spelling: We learned that numbers up to 99 are spelled with a hypen:

  • twenty-one
  • ninety-nine
  • one hundred thirty-five

We also reviewed /s/ spelling patterns, which will be the skill tested on tomorrow’s spelling test. Common /s/ patterns: s, ss, sc, ce, ci, cy.

Cursive: Cursive workbook pp. 60-62 are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. Students also received their recent STAR Reading level. Here is our class performance:

Writing: Students continued working on their Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook project. Students will publish their adventure as a website at sites.mrhowd.com. See below for more details.

This project is due Friday, January 17. Students should be finishing their story, revising, or editing at this point.

Spelling: We learned some rules for suffixes:

  • Most suffixes are just added onto a word: pencils, walking, painter
  • Drop the silent e before vowel suffixes: careful, caring, dancing, dancer
  • Double the final consonant for one syllable words using vowel suffixes: hugging, hugs, running, runs

Cursive: Cursive workbook pp. 60-62 are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on determining importance and using context clues and reading strategies.

Writing: Students continued drafting for Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook project. Students will publish their adventure as a website at sites.mrhowd.com. See below for more details.

Science: We used syringes to learn that matter takes up space. When the syringes were filled with air, students weren’t able to press the plunger in all the way.

Spelling: We learned that prefixes are letters added to the front of a base word that change its meaning. Prefixes don’t change the spelling of the base word.

Cursive: Cursive workbook pp. 60-62 are due Friday.

Reading: Students completed a STAR Reading test today and also practiced reading skills with MobyMax Reading.

Writing: Students continued drafting for Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook project. Students will publish their adventure as a website at sites.mrhowd.com. See below for more details.

Choose Your Own Adventure Resources

Math: We reviewed subtracting across zeroes today, such as 600 – 123. Students also practiced math skills using Khan Academy. Here’s skill to work on for homework.

Science: We reviewed and practiced common temperature benchmarks:

  • water freezing
  • room temperature
  • body temperature
  • water boiling

Students have been asked to learn these four temperatures, in Celsius and Fahrenheit.

Social Studies: None today due to extra time with reading.

Spelling: Students completed a spelling achievement test today. A similar test will be taken later in the year to measure progress.

Cursive: Cursive workbook pp. 60-62 are due Friday.

Reading: None today due to extra time with social studies.

Writing: Students continued drafting for Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook project. Students are writing a fiction adventure story with choices that the reader can make. Each choice can change how the story turns out. Students will publish their adventure as a website at sites.mrhowd.com. See below for more details.
