Spelling: We learned another rule for adding suffixes: for words ending in y, change the y to i before adding the suffix, except for ing.

Cursive: Cursive workbook pp. 64-65 are due Monday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students selected a library book on which to write a literary essay. Here are the main parts of a literary essay:

  1. Introduction with the name of the book, summary, and the theme of the book
  2. At least three examples from the book that support and prove the theme
  3. A conclusion that restates the theme and what can be learned from the book

Students started reading their book and working on their instruction. A literary essay is due Friday, February 7.

Math: Today students completed a test about addition and subtraction.

Science: Students completed an experiment about determining the state of matter in three different balloons. Homework is to finish the 3 Balloons experiment if not done in class.

Social Studies: We learned how changes in technology, natural resources, or competition can change an entire economy. An example is the ghost town of Rhyolite that had a growing economy because of the discovery of gold, but became a ghost town after the mines were closed.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive workbook pp. 63 is due Monday.

Reading: Today was reading skills practice day using MobyMax Reading and AR.

Writing: We continued to talk about literary essays (here’s a sample). Here are the main parts of a literary essay:

  1. Introduction with the name of the book, summary, and the theme of the book
  2. At least three examples from the book that support and prove the theme
  3. A conclusion that restates the theme

We worked on the introduction to an essay for the short story, High and Lifted Up, then we started working on three examples from the book that matched the theme we noticed.

Students start working on their own essays next week. A literary essay is due Friday, February 7.

Math: Today was a math skills practice day during Khan Academy and MobyMax.

Science: We reviewed the three states of matter and what they are like. We learned that sand sometimes acts like a liquid, but is a granular solid:

Cursive: Cursive workbook pp. 63 is due Friday.

Reading: Today was reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on inferring using clues as a reading strategy.

Writing: We continued to talk about literary essays (here’s a sample). Here are the main parts of a literary essay:

  1. Introduction with the name of the book, summary, and the theme of the book
  2. At least three examples from the book that support and prove the theme
  3. A conclusion that restates the theme

We started to work on a practice essay about the short story, High and Lifted Up, thinking about what the theme of the story could be.

Math: Students completed a STAR Math test today.

Science: We reviewed the three states of matter and what they are like:

  • solids have a definite shape and volume
  • liquids have a definite volume, but a changing shape
  • gases have a changing shape and volume.

Social Studies: We talked about how global competition can affect jobs, prices and the quality of goods in the US. Homework is to finish the Effects of Global Competition page started in class.

Cursive: Cursive workbook pp. 63 is due Friday.

Reading: Today was discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We started working on our next writing project, a literary essay (here’s a sample). Students will select a picture book and write an essay about the theme or big idea of the book.  The essay is due Friday, February 7.

Math: We practiced drawing pictures and writing equations to help solve number stories.

Science: Students worked on an experiment comparing solids, liquids, and gases. Homework is to finish and improve the notes from the “Matter in a Baggie” experiment from today.

Social Studies: None today due to art.
